"Les Belles D'Ecole Marianne: Fly Girls Meme Necromancy"

I've been thinking about Fly Girls again, but more specifically, I've been thinking about the French contingent of Fly Girls. Sure, they didn't appear much in canon - for obvious reasons - but Marianne's girls are a lot deeper than the arrogant ditzes the fandom so often describes them as. I thought I'd give them a brief spotlight here today. =]

M.S.406

"Everything I have might not be enough, but you're still going to get it. Who would I be if you didn't?"

Full Name: M.S.406 Morane-Saulnier
Date of Birth: 8th August 1935
Class: Senior

Yes, the extra full stop's important. Yes, she will fight you about it. It probably won't go all that well for her, but she'll still fight you about it. That's M.S.406 all over, really. While she's graceful and has that kind of effortless French cool about her, she really lacks in the firepower department, as evidenced by her frequent poor matchups with Me 109. Don't dismiss her out of hand though. She might look willowy and slender, but she can take a hell of a lot of punishment - she had to, given the sheer amount friend Dora was willing to dish out. After the Gymnasium Germania takeover, she's another sad sight in the background helping train up the Gymnasium's new girls or working with the tiny Fruntimmersskolan Lentokenttä satellite programme to rack up some points against Rodina-Mat.

D.520

"We can do it! We can win! We just have to believe! We, we just have to believe..."

Full Name: D.520 Dewoitine
Date of Birth: 2nd October 1938
Class: Freshman

Poor, sweet D.520. Young and plucky and powered mostly by the élan vital of the Ecole Marianne creed, she was thrown in unseasoned and too soon. She's a perky, pretty shortstack who is rightly proud of her track record (giving 109 a bloody nose a time or two), but she's got a horrible tendency to lose focus in key situations. It was nice of the show to put in very accurate ADHD representation and use it to show that it was truly a disability rather than comic relief, but it does mean that D.520 gets the sticky end of the stick from fans who want comic relief. In actual fights, she's just as balletic as M.S.406 and can take a hit too, but her real X factor is her endurance. She can run for hours and hours - which is why she wound up running away from school to go to North Africa with Mozzie in that one spinoff nobody remembers.

MB.152

"I told you, M'sieu, I'm fine. Look around you. Do you think I have the luxury of not being fine?" (cw: blood)

Full Name: MB.152C.1 Bloch
Date of Birth: 15th December 1938
Class: Freshman

MB.152 is probably the bravest of the Marianne girls... because she's just not very good at this. She's plagued by problems with her body and her game, she joined the program too late to do much of anything, and she spent most of her time on the field getting curbstomped by 109 and 110. Like everyone else, though, she doesn't give up hope, even training in secret to bolster her endurance so she can break out of Gymnasium Germania to join up with other schools. Despite Fly Girls not being that kind of show, MB.152 is chesty underneath her suit and tie, but all they're used for is slowing her down. There's no fanservice of her in canon; you'll have to find the doujins for that, but most of them have her getting the shit kicked out of her by the Germania girls to a degree that's frankly upsetting.

63

"You think I'm not good enough? You're right. I'm not. But if you were up against someone, and you knew you weren't good enough... I think you'd give up. And that's why we'll win, in the end."

Full Name: 63 Potez
Date of Birth: 25th April 1936
Class: Junior

Despite looking very similar to Bf 110 on the Germania team, the two couldn't be more different in terms of things like temperament, speed, and overall being-good-at-this-ness. 63 is the captain of the Ecole Marianne team largely by default, being more of a club secretary trying desperately to get the administration to take the tournament seriously. She does get better in the end - experience lets her find her true calling as a recon specialist like resident best girl Mozzie - but like M.S.406, she can't break out of the Gymnasium Germania's campus after the French school is taken over. Both girls are made to wear red and yellow uniforms that mark them out as foreign students, and she's the target of a lot of bullying in doujins for it. Even there, though, she doesn't give up. Not once. That's the theme of the Marianne Fly Girls through and through.

---

So that was Fly Girls' French contingent. Enclosed are pictures, but don't take them as gospel. I hope they're of interest to those on the forum who keep the Fly Girls fires burning.

FiMFiction.net: we might accept blatant porn involving the cast of My Little Pony but as God is my witness we have standards.

And no, none of them are in maid outfits. That's one pun too far, even for me.

Nah, they saved that for the 5th anniversary omake series, namely the traditional "school festival" episode. Ironically, Marianne chose not to set up a maid cafe, as 406 vetoed the idea the moment "french maid" was uttered, but not before 520 managed to fool 152 into wearing one of the outfits. They settled for a simple street cafe style serving coffee and pastries.

Columbia went with an anachronistic 50s burger joint at P-38's insistence (mostly to wear a miniskirt), but it worked pretty well with P-40 working the grill, P-51 working the soda fountain, and the others as car hops (including P-47 carrying four complete orders at once with no problems). Just don't expect anything more than a cheeseburger and a Pepsi.

Germania insisted on showing the glory of their native land by setting up (what else?) a beer hall complete with dirndls all around, one of the few times that 109 looked relaxed and 190 loosened up and acted like a young maiden. They even managed to get poor Stuka to stop stumbling over her own feet long enough to serve drinks.

Rodina-Mat didn't really see much of a point to the whole "festival," but they'd be fools to pass up the opportunity to make a few kopeks and so set up a simple cafeteria serving traditional Russian and Eastern European fare. Though it probably wasn't the best of ideas by the faculty to allow them to set up shop right across from Germania.

Britannia chose not to follow the pack and instead set up a mock street market, which included Hurry serving up grub from a fish and chips stall, Spitfire and Seafire selling various trinkets and fancies, and Mozzie running a general goods "store." The girls might have made more in profits if Spitfire didn't keep leaving her stall to get in line for fish and chips, while Mozzie was a bit too intimidating for some students.

Finally, East Asia Girl's Academy ended up being the made cafe, much to poor Zero's displeasure. Between Hayabusa scaring off guests with her shark-toothed grin, Hien's motor-mouth making it impossible for guests to follow what she was saying, and Raiden not showing up until nearly closing time, the whole thing was almost a complete disaster. If it hadn't been for P-40 taking pity on her and agreeing (for the first and only time) to wear one of the maid outfits to pick up the slack, the poor samurai might have finally made good on the threats to commit honorable suicide.

Overall it was a fun little episode, capped off with a very exhausted P-40 trying to sneak back into the dorms while still dressed as a maid...only to be greeted with a camera flash courtesy of P-38.
