"XCOM: Chimera Squad"

It's five years after the War of the Chosen, and this time the humans actually won. City 31 is a beacon of integration where humans, aliens, and hybrids are not actively opposed to each other.

Chimera Squad comes to town at the invitation of Mayor Nightingale, to do what the Reclamation Agency does - get restricted alien technology off the streets.

And then things go south.

I'm enjoying this more than the usual XCOM experience, because my agents get to banter with each other. Also, I'm not walking into fog of war, discovering a group of Mutons, and getting slaughtered.

It's a familiar-yet-different game, and I definitely want to reach the end of the story...and I feel like I actually have a chance to do that.

I recommend it to anybody who liked XCOM.

I dunno if I'd go that far. It's not quite what I expected but it's all pretty consistent, at least.

I'm finding myself mildly addicted - I suspect it will keep me going for a few playthroughs so I can check out all the agents, but I already have some favorites.

I'll allow that the cutscenes aren't as impressive, but the characters in actual play are well-rendered, and when the chips are down, gameplay is more important to me than how much they spent on 3-D modeling the non-interactive parts.

So wait. Is this an actual *new* XCOM game, or a fan thing? I don't mind either way, but it's an important distinction to make.

EDIT: ...Well, damn. Surprised I didn't hear about this from the XCOM fans I hang around with before now. Now I just have to figure out where to get the money to get it...

It's an actual new XCOM game that feels like a fan thing. I can't think of a better way of summarizing the experience than that.

Which is not to say it's bad, as such, but I would say it's priced fairly vs. the "main" games in the series, so let that guide your expectations vs. same, put it that way.

Considering I'm mostly here for the story, the graphics don't bother me so much. Having characters with personality beyond 'Badass soldier/mercenary desperately fighting aliens' is a nice change of pace.
