"(CTCS) Mission Time Zero-Zero-Zero"

Here's our little Christmas present for the faithful this year! It's another excerpt from Challenging the Cold Silence, but with a difference: This one is configured as a sort of publisher's sample of what the whole finished product will be like. (Phil suggests thinking of it as the kind of upcoming-release sample you find at international book fairs.) Featuring two illustrations by Adam Kopala and graphic design by yours truly, here is a United Republic Space Agency special publication, Project Phoenix Flight: Mission Time Zero-Zero-Zero.

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm listed first in the author credits on the fourth-wall credits page, but in the case of this particular item that's purely an alphabetical thing. Phil wrote the majority of the first draft of this particular passage!

Enjoy, and merry Christmas-and-other-proximate-holidays.

You've done an incredible job here, all of you. There's a lot of hard work and TLC that went into this, I can tell--it shows how busy you all have been putting this together. I'm seriously impressed. Thank you.

Thanks also for putting out something new for me to read as I sit at work on Christmas Day. I may not be religious, but I do celebrate the holiday and I know you all must have been burning some midnight oil to get it out on time.

Merry Christmas (and whatever other salutations), everyone.

That was a great little piece to wake up to. I hate to think how much effort went into making it, but it was time well spent as far as I'm concerned.

Well, look, guys, I don't want to come across as too much of an attention junkie, but I have to confess the response level to this item... worries me a bit. I wasn't expecting the thread to overflow or anything, but three replies in the first week? Yikes.

The timing may be an issue there--anyone who was with family elsewhere may not have access, or the time to use it, until the new year starts.

True, I suppose, but dang, I mean, is that still a thing? It's not like the old days, when practically everyone who was on the Internet was in college and didn't have access if they were off-campus for break. :)

Back then you had people in their early 20s who didn't have net access because they went home for $FamilyEvent.

Now their in their 40s and have net access, but are busy helping set up/run/clean up after $FamilyEvent.

My mom's whole side of the family comes from a very poor part of Pennsylvania. She literally was a coal miner's daughter. I actually don't know if they know what the Internet is.

So, yeah, people like that still exist.

For my part, the entire stretch from Thanksgiving to after New Year's is... basically hell. I do not people very well, and this is basically the one time of the year I have no other options.

That being said, I am heartily impressed with the amount of obvious thought that has gone into this. You guys took the existing world and ran with it, to a point where I'm pretty sure the original creators would be impressed.

Good show.

I'll be honest-- I can't speak for anyone else, but the purely LoK stuff isn't really that appealing for me. I'll read it, because you write well, but I enjoy the characters and setting most when they're interacting with the rest of UF. Likewise the Strike Witches pieces, now that I think about it-- lack of interest/familiarity with the source material means I enjoy it most when UF-Gryphon (or whoever) is there to hook my interest. And this piece in particular was very self-contained, so that issue is compounded. It's essentially just well-written Legacy of Korra fanfic, rather than an Undocumented Features work. And there's probably lots of well-written LoK fanfic out there (well, ok, there must be some, as per the inverse of Sturgeon's Law), but I'm not going to read any of it, because it's just Not My Thing.

Polished and solid, it felt like a snippet from an episode of Korra that really should have been aired. I can't wait for the full thing!

I don't post much on the forums. Usually by the time I've read something and figured out what I think of it, somebody else has already said what I think. Anyway here are my thoughts:

I loved all the little details about the flight that you put in. From the comments about the water ballast needed to balance the Naga for flight to the control surfaces barely working at the altitude ceiling to the remark about shortening difference between max speed and stall speed, it was great. Admittedly, I am a huge sucker for stories about realistic space travel (aside from the bending), but I still think the attention to those details helps when crafting a story about Diqiu's version of the Apollo program.

On that note would also like to say that I'm glad that you didn't just copy the method that the actual Apollo program used. It shows consideration for the different restrictions this world is working under (for example: being unable to develop the ability to dock two space-craft means forcing a direct ascent approach).

I'd also like to give props to the presentation. The artwork is gorgeous. The little details again really shine here, like the image of a Polarbear-dog on the Naga's hull.

Anyway, I think that's everything. I of course have a ton of questions about the mission, but I suspect those answers will have to wait until the rest comes out :)

Wait, what? *Goes and checks* Ha, I missed that one! Even better, you can see what has to be Korra, because you can't have the Polarbear-dog without her Avatar.

I still love the note about the air and metal bending to help the Naga reach the height needed.

Naga CV-1's nose art was based on a frame extracted from the first episode:

Basically, they're running toward the moon from the Southern Water Tribe flag. The image is reversed, but not mirrored, for the right side of the aircraft (i.e., they're running left to right, toward the moon, but the moon is still a waning crescent).

Unfortunately, I don't particularly like the Legend of Korra (I liked AtLA just fine), and except for the bits that directly intersect with UF stuff -- like the Korra-in-Zeta-Cygni pieces, which I've read and re-read several times now -- I don't really find them all that interesting.

It's not the staff's writing, it's the source material, if that makes sense.

Original stuff (or at least I assume it's original) like the A Fire To Be Lighted characters, I'm loving. I'd like to see more of them! But the mostly LoK stuff is just not my cup of tea, basically -- which tends to mean I don't check in on this sub-forum all that often, especially given my perpetual problems with the unread-posts indicators, which primarily stem from me being too lazy to make use of the manual mark-as-read feature and DCForum's, er, uniqueness.

Which is a long-winded way of saying "I didn't see this until now, sorry 'bout that."

That said... it's a nice, slick-looking piece, not at all hard on the eyes! I did spot what I'm pretty sure is a typo, but as you said this is a draft and you may well already be aware of it. Or it's a LoK thing that I'm unfamiliar with.

First sentence, second paragraph:

"In the inevitable mover about the mission, someone"

Should that be "movie" instead?

Nope, that's just what people in Diqiu call moving pictures on celluloid or other media. You've got a viewer (the person watching) and a mover (the thing being presented) as opposed to a picture (which is static).

I stand corrected then!

I don't particularly look for errors. I spent some time as an editor and now I just sort of can't help but see them. I'll have to update my wordlists for UF/TLoK stuff, obviously. :)

Admittedly, EPU does have a proven track record of fixing what done went wrong with a lot of source material, so in that vein I'll try to do better about checking in on it.

I had a vague metaphor in mind about tasting things before I decide I don't like them, etc and so on, but I lack brainpower to put it in words properly.
