"Anime Recommendations: Romance"
|
LAST EDITED ON Dec-08-22 AT 01:06 AM (EST) Okay, got some good ones here, I think. Nothing too special about this category in terms of this post, just series that focus more on the romance than any other aspect, in my estimation. This isn't really a genre I watch on purpose - it's usually something that happens in the course of a comedy, or a fantasy, or a magical girl show, for me, so this one is probably gonna be pretty short. As always, please chime in with your own!My Dress-Up Darling Wakana Gojo is a high school student with a secret admiration for hina dolls and aspires to become a craftsman like his grandfather. Having been socially traumatized for his passion, he had closed himself off from everyone. One day at school, his classmate Marin Kitagawa runs into him using a sewing machine for making a doll's costume. After admiring Wakana's doll and praising his work, Marin asks if Wakana could help her create cosplays. Initially, Wakana is nervous about his ability to create cosplay costumes for Marin because of his experience being limited to Hina dolls. However, he agrees to do it. --Nothing I can say that wasn't said better by Gryphon ToraDora! Ryuji Takasu is frustrated at trying to look his best as he enters his second year of high school. Despite his gentle personality, his eyes give him the appearance of an intimidating delinquent. He is happy to be classmates with his best friend Yusaku Kitamura, as well as the girl he has a crush on, Minori Kushieda. However, he unexpectedly runs into "the school's most dangerous animal of the highest risk level"—Taiga Aisaka—who just happens to be Minori's best friend. Taiga has a negative attitude towards others and has a habit of snapping violently at people. She takes an instant dislike to Ryuji, and it turns out she is living in an apartment facing Ryuji's house. When Ryuji discovers that Taiga has a crush on Yusaku, and Taiga finds out about Ryuji's affections towards Minori, they make an arrangement to help set each other up with their crushes. --ToraDora is one of my favorite romantic shows ever. Though I don't have a lot to compare it too, I found it extremely refreshing. Karakai Jozu no Takagi-san (Teasing Master Takagi) Middle school students Nishikata and Takagi sit next to each other in class. Takagi enjoys teasing Nishikata with embarrassing pranks and jokes. In response, Nishikata creates plans to get his revenge, but he fails when she identifies his weaknesses and capitalizes on them. In some rare instances where Takagi loses the challenge, Nishikata does not feel like he really won. The setting is based on the town of Tonoshō in the Kagawa Prefecture. --This one is very cute, the much more emotionally mature Takagi - who seems to know exactly what she's doing -with the more childish Nishikata - who only barely has a clue. There's a sequel series as well, though it's currently manga-only. Actually, I am Asahi Kuromine, a normal high school student who supposedly cannot keep a secret, finds his demeanor quickly challenged when he spots his classmate, Youko Shiragami, unfurling a large pair of wings from her back. He learns that Youko is a vampire, and that she is only able to attend a normal school on one condition: no one must discover her true identity. This secret becomes difficult to maintain, as Youko herself is an airhead and Asahi's childhood friend Mikan keeps bullying the two of them. Later on, he discovers more girls in his school with secrets of their own: a tiny alien who rides a human-sized exoskeleton of herself, a werewolf capable of switching gender at any depiction of a moon, a thousand-year-old demon who secretly runs the school, and more who pose a challenge as Asahi tries to maintain Youko's secret. --Also called "My Monster Secret", which both gives stuff away and isn't entirely accurate, this is a bit more of a romantic comedy. Don't have too much to say about it besides I like it. ....Yeah, that seems about it, unless I want to stretch what I consider romantic anime a bit. Well, shorter posts are good, too, sometimes. At least I'm not leaving a lot out this time. About the only one I'm not listing is because I've consumed so little of it, but would definitely fit my arbitrary criteria from everything I've heard of it is Sound! Euphonium, but since I actually know so little about it, I can't say anything except "This also exists."

I'll nominate Love After World Domination. Summary Blurb: Fudo Aikawa and Desumi Magahara are in love. There's only one small problem: they are mortal enemies. Fudo is the red ranger and leader of the fighting force Gelato 5, while Desumi is the reaper princess of the evil organization Gekko. To make matters worse, neither of them have ever been in a relationship before. They have to keep their budding romance a secret, while figuring out how to be in a relationship and juggle their real life responsibilities along the way. This is a rather light hearted series where, as indicated above, we get to watch a pair of nature's most perfect idiots be amazingly wholesome, in some cases in spite of their chosen profession. There are plenty of laughs, this could easily have be slotted as comedy, and plenty of sweet moments as well.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-08-22 AT 04:47 PM (EST) My tastes run toward the romantic comedy, which is why I'm starting with Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!Hana Uzaki is a year younger than Sakurai, and when she enters college, she discovers that he still has Resting Grumpy Face. Between that and his considerable height, he's naturally intimidating, but she's not letting her senpai spend his college years without a friend. Between Hana and Sakurai's interactions, misunderstandings with her family, people wanting to push them together even as they don't know exactly what they want, and Reaction Cat's appearances, this show hits its comedic value while making the attraction believable. I'm still concerned about who bought Hana the t-shirt with "SUGOI DEKAI" (subtitled as "Super Huge") on it, but one can't claim that it's false advertising regarding the real estate under it. My Stepmom's Daughter is My Ex Well, they aren't burying the lede. Mizuto Irido and Yume Ayai dated in middle school, but broke up. The show runs flashbacks to explain what happened, and how it reflects on their trying to deal with presenting the image of friendly step-siblings while simultaneously hiding their old relationship, learning more about the person that they didn't really know when they were dating, and arguing over who's the older sibling. Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie Well, when you're talking about somebody who saves her boyfriend from certain death by kicking a falling sign away before it bashes his head in, that's kind of a given. It's been a while since I watched it, so I'm not able to describe why I love this show right now, but it's worth the time. Kaguya-Sama: Love is War At a school for the elite, two students stand out: Kaguya Shinomiya, heir apparent to a business empire that has stood for generations, and Miyuki Shinogame, whose studious nature has brought him to academic heights. As the Vice-President and President of the student council, respectively, they are the sort of people that the student body idolizes. Unfortunately, they're also fundamentally broken people in at least one way: They believe that admitting love is a weakness. No love confessions for them, oh, no. They're both convinced that doing so would put them in a lesser position in the relationship. So they spend their time in complicated plots to get the other to admit their love. While they're clearly in love with each other, part of the fun is watching well-meaning onlookers (usually the Student Council's secretary) foil all their plans. Oh, that's where that originated. I've only encountered it as a meme fan artists like to put on other characters noted, either canonically or in Common Fanon, for being buxom, e.g., Shirley Yeager, Meiling, Mio Akiyama. (Weirdly, other K-On! characters harboring breast envy for Mio is canon even though she isn't the bustiest member of the cast, or even of Hokago Tea Time.) --G. -><- Benjamin D. LAST EDITED ON Dec-10-22 AT 07:29 AM (EST) The main thing I know about Uzaki is that it made a lot of people very angry that adult women who are not very tall, yet very well developed exist. The others....Well, I've at least heard of Kaguya-sama and Shikimori, but since I seldom deliberately watch actual romance anything, that's the extent of it.Harem stuff, comedies, fantasy stories, etc, that have solid romantic aspects, sure, but what I listed is basically the extent of what I consider *romance* series. I just don't really find them interesting, speaking purely personally. I've heard tell that Science Fell In Love, So I Decided to Prove It is pretty good and vaguely similar to what you said about Kaguya-sama, though I can't vouch for it at all. |
