"How to Summerize Undocumented Features"

Well you take a virtually every anime and sci-fi show, movie etc.
ever made, through all of their respective universes into a blender,
hit purree, and put two tech school geeks from Massachusettes (sp) in
the middle of the grand mess with a Grand Destiny.

Sound right everybody.

[SMARTASS ANSWER: Usually, it's just a matter of changing to the lighter-weight oil and making sure the air conditioner is fully charged. Or, if you prefer the homeowner-oriented version, cleaning the gutters and putting the screens in the storm doors.]

>Well you take a virtually every anime and sci-fi show, movie etc.
>ever made,

Please, try to have some perspective on this - UF doesn't contain references to anywhere near "virtually every" anything. If I thought about it for more than the few seconds I'm willing to invest, I suspect I could come up with twice as many things that aren't referenced in UF as that are[1], and that's just in a few minutes. Concerted research would count the difference in orders of magnitude. There is an awful lot of anime and sci-fi out there, and I haven't even seen virtually all of it, let alone referenced it in UF.[2]

--G.
[1]That, of course, assumes I knew how many things are referenced in UF and what they are - which I don't, and don't really care to try and find out.
[2]Nor, taking Sturgeon's Law into account, do I want to.

haven't you heard of "creative exaggeration". I could off hand
think of tons of things you haven't reference (yet anyway).

Well, yeah - my point. Creative exaggeration is all well and good, but if you're eactually trying to summarize something for somebody, hyperbole is probably best avoided...

Take a computer lab from the student hub of a relatively
boring college somewhere between the Canadian
border and Boston , Mass..
Add a local group of budding engineers, and computer
techs, with at least a minor interest in roleplay, and anime/manga.
Stir in a plot device to create a pair of lovely, well armed,
angles that mean well.
Destroy the student cafeteria to creat a power source.
Blow up a small city/town as completely as possible.
Shake well.
Pretend that you know exactly what your doing when
the story begins to write itself.
Return and blow up the city once more.
Pray that your fans don't hunt you down.

If he is, he's even more adept at seeing subtext where none exists than the ordinary fan, and that's saying a lot in this series' case. :)

Actualy in this case the lime was there from the start.

I would suggest you glare Zoner, and R-Type until they talk.

Lime in this case is Where the sex is hinted at, whether or not it actualy happened.

You may remember this scene from UF - 1;

"So, ah, Zoner...how did your evening go?"
MegaZone smirked a silly little smirk, whistled a little
tune, and said nothing.
A bead of sweat rolled down Ben's nose, poised on the
tip, and fell off. His hands were shaking, his eyes squeezed
shut. Zoner's little silly grin drove him absolutely insane,
especially under circumstances like these.

Umm... no, yaoi == yaoi, yuri == yuri. Yaoi and yuri are genres, so to speak, lime and lemon are ratings, and they don't necessarily mean yaoi or yuri (although they're the most common). Lime == PG-13, where the sex is implied; basically, it's the tasteful cutaway. Lemon == NC-17 or more, where the sex is explicit. An 'R' could go either way, but generally it'd lean towards lemon. "The Day the Universe Changed" from NXE would qualify as a lemon.

I've also heard of a "pineapple", but I'm not sure what that is. I think it might be BDSM.

I have never heard of 'lime' used this way - but the few times I have heard it used over the past 10+ years it meant 'yaoi'.

Personally I think it is just fscking stupid no matter what it means and therefore never use it. It is just some fans being 'clever' - for small quantities of clever.

Personally I can't be bothered with the pigeonholing fandom has become obsessed with.

>NC-17 or more, where the sex is explicit. An 'R' could go either way,

Not in my book. I think the trend to label anything that has any sexual contant at all as 'lemon' is another stupid ass move in fandom. That wasn't how it used to be. It had to be graphic to be lemon. Now I see people labeling anything that even *mentions* characters having sex as lemon. "And then they had sex." Oops, characters having sex, it must be lemon! I really am getting bitter about fandom... sometimes I want to issue a collective bitch slap...

IMNSHO nothing Eyrie has ever posted qualifies as lemon, and I would not allow any of it to be so labeled.

*shrug* I'm not big into anime fanfic as a whole (not big into fanfic as awhole, anymore), so when someone I knew mentioned that she was running a Gundam Wing lime archive, I asked her what that was supposed to mean, and she explained the lemon/lime thing as a rating system. Different axis than yaoi/yuri/het.

>Personally I can't be bothered with the pigeonholing fandom has become
>obsessed with.

Neither do I, really. If I must rate what I write, I use analogies to the MPAA rating system, and I tend to ignore genre labels beyond using "xover" (which is pretty much everything I write anyway). But it helps to be aware of what other people are doing when you're browsing through an archive and want to steer away from lemon yaoi (and, possibly, steer towards lemon yuri). While I certainly have a curmudgeonly streak, I've come to accept the shifts in definition. I guess it's not that tough for me, since I'm not really deeply involved in fanfic in any way (although I'm about to plunge neck deep into it when my current project sees the light of day).

Well, I was being silly, protesting UF's lack of a particular thing I thought was represented by "lime" in the shorthand of online fandom; from there it bogged down into a terminology muddle and gave Zoner an opportunity to check out the view from his high horse again. Go figure...

   ObClaimToFameByAssociation-

Zoner nearly stepped on a close acquaintance of mine at a recent 'con in California (recent as being within this calendar year). Gave her large, black-leather-clad boyfriend a mini-cd, and meaundered off.

I stole the CD a couple months ago. I keep meaning to hook up a trayed CD-rom so I can check it for "the chord from hell".

me? well, I was in Alaska at the time. I don't go to 'cons.. to broke.

Ironically, that's what I'd figured you meant. That's why I was mildly amusied when everyone else started looking for yaoi and/or PG-13 love scenes in UF. I just threw my two cents in because it was pretty clear that some of the anime fanfic curmudgeons weren't entirely familiar with the usage shifts the terms "lime" and "lemon" have undergone in recent years.

A relatively liberal interpretation of "recent", IMO, at least in terms of Internet Time. I've been following anime fanfic since around 1995 and lime/lemon have always had this "recent" meaning to me.

Tracing the little lines on the tree diagram, it appears he means the Rod M/Mercutio whatsis that I posted. And I'll answer to the best of my ability -- I can't remember where I found it. As far as I can tell from its position in my quote file, I came across it sometime around January, but that's all I can determine.
