"Omnibus 4 is now in production..."

... which means the list of what's in it is complete. It awaits the New Content (as you know, Mini-Omnis come with a bonus story that hasn't been on the Forum before), but most of the grunt work (and there is a good bit of it) is finished.

What's in it:

1. Excerpt from Get the Girl, Kill the Baddies (And Save the Entire Planet)
2. The Honor of Mars
3. Travellers on the Shadowed Road
4. Our Man Bacon
5. The Final Simulation
6. Prescott's Bluff
7. Second Chances are Illogical
8. Duet for Robots in E
9. The Art of Noise
10. A Walk in the Woods
11. Hello, Neighbors!
12. Like Civilized Men
13. Matalde the Red
14. The Sandero Affair
15. Before Victory Comes Honor
16. Reindeer Games
17. Mister Midshipman Tenjou: For the Good of the Service

I wonder if biotech is advanced enough in UF to allow two women to dispense with males entirely for their reproductive needs. Not cloning, but a more traditional 50-50 split of the heredity. Maybe fusing eggs in a lab, maybe a total designer genome. Hmmm. Interesting to think about.

Go back and read Interlude on Titan in F (For Tomorrow) - it's explicitly discussed (and dismissed for the given situation) there.

Overtechnology has come up with a retrovirus that can pretty much immunize someone
against death, Mann Systems tanks can make ICZERs. The WDF made intelligent dinosaurs in its spare time. I think the tech of the day is quite able to handle a little gene-splicing.

Since I used to work at Ocean Optics, I recall an incident when the Tampa facility was attempting to retrofit a sample chamber (we do elemental analysis as well as spectrum, but that's a different use despite using spectrum units with our elemental analysis chamber.)

Apparently one of the developers there disregarded laser safety and got zipped in one by the Class II laser we use while making manual live adjustments. He's fine, BTW, but that's one for the company books--that quote is so apropos, Geoff.

Many years ago, when I hung out at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, they sold t-shirts with that on it, as an industrial warning logo, as a fundraiser for the Lasers, Optics, Holography and Other Mean Uses Of Light Club.

He's from the year 413,000,000 or thereabouts, but in his timeline, Earth's original civilization ended in fire in about 1988, and Ω-II was developed a year or two afterward. (Yes; afterward.)

While I have felt no particular need to investigate spacegoing derivatives of Forester, I confess I have perused a number of those who followed him in fictionalizing the same basic period - O'Brian, Dudley Pope, and Alexander Kent, mainly. (I did read An Eye of the Fleet, the first volume in Richard Woodman's Nathaniel Drinkwater series, but I didn't find it engaging and won't be continuing with that series. The brutality of life at sea in the Revolutionary-to-Napoleonic period is something that's inescapable in any such series, and rightly so too, but Woodman seems to have an unnerving fascination with it at times, dwelling on the unsavories like Hannibal Lecter talking about livers. I find it offputting.)

Mind you, this was not so much in the way of research as just because I happen to like that sort of novel.
