That all said, I know I haven't responded to every thread around here (and I won't unless I have something at least marginally intelligent to say), but OWAW has gotten me to start watching Strike Witches again, and now, heavens help me, I've been looking up KanColle characters. The stories here have been fantastic; I like them 100 times better than the original material. =)

Well, in fairness(?), quite apart from the disturbance he just caused within a few miles of a major military base, Corwin is still wanted in the Earth Alliance in connection with aforementioned previous Valiant exploits. So if he called them up and announced his presence, yeah, they would be inclined to go after him regardless. It would be the equivalent of going on their in-game chat channel and typing COME AT ME BRO.* :)

n.b. "knot" is a unit of speed. "Nautical mile" is the associated unit of distance (one knot is one nautical mile per hour). The phonetic similarity is a coincidence; "knot" originates from a method of measuring the speed of a sailing ship that involved a literal rope with literal knots in it. :)

I'm flattered, though personally I think the original Strike Witches gets a bit of an unfair kicking in that comparison, apart from its treatment of Mio. :)

Heh - that's actually one of the running jokes of the Strike Witches metacanon. In-story, when discussing what are obviously panties, they almost always use the word for "trousers" (zubon) instead. The implication is that it's a bit of official nomenclature, a bit of rules lawyering by the armed forces so that witches aren't constantly getting dinged for out-of-uniform. It's even lampshaded sometimes in secondary materials as a psychological dodge the witches themselves use to make themselves comfortable with the arrangement (which is where the general fandom tagline, often used and repurposed in various parodical contexts, comes from: "they're not panties, so it's not embarrassing.")

I haven't seen more than, like, the first episode of KanColle. The initial intro you already referred to (Hi, this is the set of assumptions we're making about the universe, and screw the reasons why) rather made me cringe dramatically.

Aaaaaah, see, I didn't know this. Learn something new every day. I thought it was being allowed because the witches -wanted- it, ie. it was sort of an ultimatum on the first fighting witches' part, a 'do it our way or keep losing cities, since we're throwing our lives away for you'. This actually puts Yoshika in context, come to think of it. Every uniform we see is either panties or tights, but doesn't she wear a school uniform swimming outfit?

The KanColle anime requires a certain amount of just not giving a shit about the details. For that matter, the game itself does as well, but it gets around it more gracefully by just ignoring them. The game, because of the way it's configured, can get away with just leaving the great bulk of what the hell is actually going on mostly to the player's imagination. This, and Kadokawa's freeform approach to supplementary media generally (they've officially acknowledged a number of different dōjinshi with completely different takes on how anything actually works), has led to a situation where there really kind of isn't a canon beyond what little is in the game itself. Which is sort of irritating and handy at the same time for the likes of me. :)

I think there's an element of that, but it seems to be partly practicality (it's hard to operate a Striker Unit with trousers on, though Adolfine Galland manages it) and partly cultural (in a couple of instances, non-military witches and retired combat witches are shown in similar states of {un}dress). It's never explained in any detail, but from context it seems like it's just a witch thing. Nobody remarks upon it on the infrequent occasions when the witches are out and about among civilians (for instance, in the episode where Lucchini, Yoshika, and Shirley go shopping in Rome).

That's the way the Imperial Fusō Navy rolls; Mio's uniform similarly teams a naval officer's jacket with an old-fashioned school swimsuit, as does Junko Takei's when she has her cameo early in season 2. Yoshika's has the sailor blouse instead because she's not an officer (which is why in OWaW, where she is an officer, she dresses like Mio instead).

(In the first episode of season 1, before Yoshika joins the Navy, they show her entire class in junior high dressed the same as she is, but I suspect that was just the animators being lazy.)

Speaking of the Fusō forces, some witches do wear (very short) skirts; Imperial Fusō Army witches like Tomoko Anabuki, of whom Yoshika owns a costume doll, wear a sort of abbreviated miko outfit similar to that sported by the Kongō class in KanColle, with a hakama-themed miniskirt.

I've been going on the assumption that the earliest known witches had to cast a lot of magic in a hurry before they'd finished dressing, and then had to spend so long convincing everybody who saw that no, being sans-trousers was a perfectly normal witch thing to do that it stuck.

That, or the rise of magic was reliant on the lack of the invention of shorts.

Indeed! Of course, I'm the kind of person that needs a little more explanation than that, I admit. I -can- watch it but it goes against my grain to turn my brain off, I suppose. I'm spoiled that way. =)

Hm. Well, making it a cultural norm makes it a good deal more palatable to me, I think. Kind of interesting introspection on my part. Huh.

I -adore- that outfit. Wonder if the miko in Fuso wear that all the time.

I assume we'll see in the next installment what exactly Earth forces (not to say Earthforce, not sure they were around then) did to i401. Because in all honesty, they weren't winning much of anything against the Fleet of Fog IIRC. I wonder what would count as ungracious when the victors basically thought they were fighting for the survival of their planet. That would have to be pretty damn ungraceful.

I think it may be a reference to the fact that I-401, after having been surrendered to the US Navy at the end of World War 2, was sunk as a target. This was apparently done to keep from having to share its technology with the Soviets per a wartime agreement.
