"Hunted Rose"

Wow, yet another fine installment. In no particular order...

Hmm, full credit listing. "The Sympony Will Return." But nothing specific. This feels like the end of this story arc (after all, a lot of stuff has been tied up with this), but there's still the whole Cephiro/Akio Ohtori/etc. thing to deal with. Which, I guess, is the next story arc.

Hehe. "Spock's Brain." Er, "SpoQ's Brain."

Devlin's a P12? Cool. I know that's strong, but not really knowing B5, I don't know just how strong.

I knew I read the hunting through a building, looking for someone and shooting at a cat thing before, and that it was in a comic (I could see it in my head); didn't remember it was TDKR until the "apologies Frank Miller" credit.)

Hee, neat. Truss has Star Wars accessories, too.

Ahh, Kaitlyn's a master now. Cool.

Ivanova in Starfleet? ...Wow.

Tremayne will be back, methinks. Somehow, he'll be back.

Dorothy... I still want a Dorothy of my own.

Liza Broadbank... I think she's gonna be changing her tune soon.

I, for one, never expected Gryph to chew out Corwin for what he did. There's breaking the rules, and then there's breaking the rules.

Daggerdisc has a Reflex cannon and a fold drive, and it can go into hyperdrive or metaspace. Does it have a warp drive, too? Why'd he go into hyperdrive *then*, though, instead of just folding to B5?

I'm sure other things will pop up as I reread it. (And this one merits rereading.)

The canon B5 scale goes from P1 (barely a wibble from other people, though it might manifest as more accurately judging character than others, being good at finding people, etc.) to P12. Psi Cops, by the very nature of their duties, are all P12s.

There have been Notable Exceptions to the P-scale in B5-- P13s and above. These folks are pretty much *always* the result of Vorlons directly interfering with genetic inheritance and whatnot.

Devlin is in the top percentiles of human telepathic ability, however, on the Psi Corps rating scale.

Actually, it's not - it's from Batman Year One.

He mentions that - it's because he's too busy to make the fold calculations in his head, and nobody else on the ship (except possibly Amanda) is able to operate a fold computer.

(Technically, we haven't seen that Daggerdisc can create its own metaspace jump point, only transit a metagate and navigate in metaspace; but then, one of those rocket-pack suits Spock used to explore V'Ger in Star Trek: The Motion Picture could theoretically do that. :)

Ah, okay. I shoulda figured it's something I've only read once or twice.

Ah, right. It slipped my mind while I was writing my comments.

Yes, and if Gryph can fit a Reflex furnace on a YT-1300-series light freighter, I think he can figure a way to fit a metagate generator in there, too.

Among other things, I'd wager. Like maybe finding out what the New Avalon HS system is like... can't imagine that the Duelist crowd would be terribly interested in returning to WPI after that whole debacle.

>Hehe. "Spock's Brain." Er, "SpoQ's Brain."

Argh! That Damn Episode! I'll see you burn in the fires of Hell, Gryphon!

Well, okay, not really. But that was dirty pool, throwing that at us like you did. ;)

>Devlin's a P12? Cool. I know that's strong, but not really knowing
>B5, I don't know just how strong.

If I remember correctly, P12 is about Psi Cop level, anything much higher doesn't come without serious mental problems (and/or Corps eugenics and drug programs).

What I wanna know is, does the action figure come with the battle-droids too? ;)

>Ahh, Kaitlyn's a master now. Cool.

And we didn't get to see the party! :P :)

>Ivanova in Starfleet? ...Wow.

What's even scarier: Ivanova and Kira on the same station.

Another thing, does Jer offer rabbits to everybody he encounters out here in the real world? Just curious.

>Tremayne will be back, methinks. Somehow, he'll be back.

Of course he'll be back! One does not set up such a towering Ahab-like obsession and then just drop it like it was a useless subplot. We probably won't see him for another couple of Movements, but he'll be back.

(Tangent: I thought Tremayne's superior was awfully lenient, letting him sulk on the Moon like that. If I was Commandant and my subordinate had just clusterfucked a blip capture operation in such a grandiose manner, I'd dope him up on sleepers, stick him in a small cage and let the teep kids poke at him with very sharp sticks. But that's me.)

>Dorothy... I still want a Dorothy of my own.

Well, I think that one's taken. Sorry. Keep looking, though. ;)

>Liza Broadbank... I think she's gonna be changing her tune soon.

Enh, maybe. I thought her tone was a lot more pissed that Kate & Co. had screwed up her life by being so arrogant as to save Devlin from the clutches of the Corps. At most I'd expect her to lay off the torment for a while, on account of the whole "saving her from nasty situation x2" thing Kate did. I expect the senior Broadbanks will do their best to chew Gryphon^UF out for nearly getting Liza killed. That Family Ain't Right. ;)

(Tangent: So what did the Corps find so interesting about young Ms. Broadbank? They admitted it wasn't telepathic ability. My bet is either some rare from of psi (higher probability) or Force awareness (lower probability). Of course, I could be (and often am) Wrong.

My first reaction went along the lines of:

"A Reflex cannon. A fucking Reflex cannon. Where the hell do you keep all this stuff in a YT-1300 hull???"

I imagine that T'Pall was right, and the Reflex core hadn't recharged enough to power the fold drive when they burned through the defense perimeter. Even engineering legends can only do so much.

>I'm sure other things will pop up as I reread it. (And this one
>merits rereading.)

You betcha.

A few minor things of my own:

Harcourt Mudd (related or parents were just fans?) "Mac" Mackenzie is, officially, now my favorite original character in all the Eyrie canon. Just thought I'd mention that.

The connections linking Liza -> Xenia -> Devlin were all there, plain sight, most obvious path, and we all ignored it in favor of "Liza's a latent teep" or "Liza ratted on X, not Devlin" theories. Well done, Mr. Director.

G'Kron and his trusty Louisville Slugger: Well, I suppose it was inevitable...

All in all, a great way to forget about sleep this bitter November evening. Kudos to all those involved.

Mr. Fnord, wondering if Ed and Ein are wiring Durandal up to B5's mainframe even as we speak.

The Psi Corps has created sleeper agents before, has it not? Who knows how long they'd had Liza before Kate & Co. rescued her.

To be fair, someone did mention Xenia and Liza knowing each other somehow, as a theory.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that Liza is a telepath, though probably not a powerful one (P5, P6, maybe? I'm shooting in the dark here), so that she may be able to do things but wouldn't go loopy like a P12 would without training. (I'm guessing here, of course.) Ah well; such things will be made clear in time.

I'm more interested in the political repercussions of the Psi Corps trying to conscript a Zeta Cygnan. The Psi Corps won't be happy until they control all telepaths in the galaxy, obviously, but Zeta Cygni won't be too pleased with this.

This is, of course, assuming that Liza admits to what they were trying to do. Although Gryph, Zoner, & co. will know, without a doubt, what the Psi Corps were doing, due to Kaitlyn and four others hearing it, Liza may not want to report it, for the same reason she likely won't say anything about what Sean Creighton tried to do. (Doubly so, since once again Kaitlyn rescued her.)

The main difference is that on may'Duj bortaS that's a good episode, because after getting SpoQ's brain back, Captain Koth and company, being Klingons, blow some shit up. :)

Sure. Nobody ever buys battledroid action figures by themselves... you can only sell them as pack-ins...

I expect he's using the same idea that Eisenhower did: Even if they have one massive clusterfuck, KEEP THEM AROUND. They may still have use in them, or at least be properly sacrificed later to keep the hounds at bay.

Knowing Gryphon's enjoyment of The History Channel - All Hitler, All The Time! - I expect this to be the case. Tremayne had one large mistake: he underestimated the devotion of the Duellists and the Federation to each other. The idea that Dios might go and dial 1-800-CORWIN-HELP was not something anyone could have predicted...

Dear God. What's the NEXT school year going to be like?

Actually, not to piss on your parade, but Roger made several large mistakes, the biggest of which was authorizing the mistreatment of a princess of Gamilon.

He could probably get out of that by claiming that he didn't actually KNOW this at the time he began... but yes, that's a bad one, too. Once he did the deep scan and hit THAT little tidbit, he should have pulled back and been the soul of decorum.

If we want to point out his BIGGEST mistake, it's not actually HIS - it's the Psi Cops in general. Their entire attitude of superiority, so that when people actually RESIST them, or foil their plans, they all seem to lose their cool and become irrational.

Which begs the question of just WHY? The whole concept of repressing their telepathic powers through training feeding back in the way that Surak taught a number of the Vulcans to avoid with cthia? Really, in B5 and in this episode, as soon as someone proves to be more capable than they'd expect, the PsiCorps member in question immediately drops the ball. They lose their focus and it all goes to Hell. Or is it just that the Psi Corps mentality of 'telepaths are superior to normals' is so completely OVERRIDING of anything else that the first shove against the structure makes it all come down?

Granted, I'm currently hoping for a scene when Tremayne deep-scans Zoner. It should be instructive, if short and painful (for Tremayne).

Any mistake that comes within a hair's width of causing the eradication of all life on Earth is not something for which excuses can be made.

Also... Roger isn't one to beg, plead or grovel. I suspect he took his demotion with a stony face and an eerie calmness.

(That's just my speculation, btw, based on what I know of the character.)

Besides, he did know. It's a matter of public record, and it would have been in Miss LeClercq's report. His troops may not have known, but if so that's only because Roger made the mistake of not telling them.

I won't answer for all cases... but in Hunted Rose, they were dealing not only with normals, but normal children. Even a normal could make that mistake in judgement.

The Psi Corps attracts certain kinds of people, especially two particular kinds which make for trouble.

The first kind is the kind that all law enforcement agencies attract- the petty thug who enjoys the arbitrary authority a badge brings.

The second kind is worse- the kind that reasons that, since everyone else is obviously worse than they are, that everyone else must be controlled for Their Own Good. This is the mentality that desires order, structure, and hierarchy, and which cannot abide a competing hierarchy or, worse yet, a free society.

Neither of these kinds of people is terribly smart in the first place, and they're all too easy prey for the -third- kind... the kind who don't just want authority or order, but raw power. Thus, they are actively -discouraged- from original thought, and when an original situation comes up, they aren't equipped to cope.

The third kind -do- cope, of course, which is why -they- come back in later episodes while the other two kinds tend to have short careers.

We saw what happened to someone trying to mind-rape Zoner when he was dark and brooding. Now he works for Eris.

If Tremayne tries to deep-scan Zoner, he turns into our newest ally.

"If you and your idiot brother hadn't double-crossed your
sister, she would never have told me about your teep boyfriend and
NONE of this would have HAPPENED!" Liza snarled.

If they don't know each other, then why is Liza saying that Xenia told her about Devlin?

The double-cross is Xenia getting cut out of the succession in favor of Amanda, right? Wasn't that arranged by a private agreement between Amanda and Garon? If Xenia didn't tell her, how does Liza know about Amanda and Garon's "double-cross" of Xenia?

That's all true, but none of it requires them to know each other; it requires only that they have had one conversation.

Pretty dumb of Xenia to pick up the phone and give someone she doesn't know that information (for that matter, how would Xenia know of Liza in the first place, let alone her... personality - Liza's not in Amanda's circle so you'd think Xenia wouldn't be interested). Has Xenia never heard of deniability and working through intermediaries, or does that not apply with her where humans are concerned?

>Patience. It'll be covered in greater detail in Reflections.

Speaking of upcoming stories, will we EVER get to see Kei and Yuri as "Kei and Yuri" again? I miss them. All we ever see of them any more is as Mom, or neighbor, or their husband's/boyfriend's appendage. Of course, in the UF universe, their function is to be the latter, but there used to be a UF story every so often where they were allowed to be the central players.

Research.

Certainly; but in this case it was necessary to get involved directly because of time constraints, and the fact that the Corps didn't get the idea the first time around and needed a bit more of a direct push.

Harcourt McKenzie was named by his (now deceased) grandfather after a dear friend of the family, the infamous con man Harcourt Fenton Mudd. Mac is ashamed of his middle name for two reasons: to most of the Federation, Mudd is a notorious con man; and to most of the Freespacers, Mudd is a notorious -incompetent- con man. Thankfully there is no blood relation, and Mac's father left the smuggling business when dear old Granddad was killed.

There's a story in that, but I've only written the introduction thus far.

Alas, Mac will not get many more chances to shine as he might in HR and in the upcoming entr'acte. He was meant to be the token ordinary guy, and once things settle down he'll go back to being ordinary... with a noticable anarchic streak. }:-{D

Maybe the boss is smarter than we take him for. If it was just a flub on a blip smash-and-grab, that would be one thing. But when the opposition includes:

  • The CFMF
  • A highly advanced non-Asimovian robot
  • Two robots that are either the galaxy's smallest security droids or the galaxy's most overpowered toy bots.
  • The Crown Princess of Gamilon, and thus Mr. Planet Bomb Himself
  • The personal off-road sportship of a Benjamin D. Hutchins, living legend on Earth and indirectly responsible for wiping Worcester off the map twice, and keeping in mind that such sportship eluded Earthforce by apparently breaking six seperate laws of physics
  • An RA with power armor that impresses Gryphon

one may assume that the problem wasn't so much the execution, but the intelligence. Add to that the fact that they may not have had time for proper intel per standard procedures, and you realize that Tremayne isn't particularly incompetent.

I think a similar effect would be had if a police department attempted a drug raid on a facility that turned out to be a powwow between the Mafia, the <insert here> "State Militia", the GRU and the US arm of Al Quada.

Tremayne was well prepared to extract one student from a college campus. He was not ready at all to handle a tremendously unlikely confluence of such highly talented people and such incredible equipment.

This is all true, but I don't think it excuses Tremayne in the least. The major problem is his initial response to finding out who the blip was on campus. If he had done it right the first time, none of this would have happened and they'd have Devlin (and only Devlin) scot-free.

What they -should- have done is sent in a small team of plainclothes Enforcers...they couldn't have possibly passed for students, but they could have passed for parents, if there were only two. They should have stayed and scoped out the place for a few days, find a place where Devlin went alone (Ironically, his practice sessions at Bancroft Tower would have been perfect), and nabbed him without anyone else being the wiser. People disappear all the time, the Psi Corps might never have been suspected by any but his allies in the Underground. Instead, Tremayne decided it would be more fun to flex his muscle. He ended up turning out an extremely unprofessional plan, one which nearly got every living being on Earth annihilated. What's worse, if he -did- have reports on Devlin's friends and chose to take them anyway (Sure, they resisted, but a lot of difference that makes to the Gamilon Emperor!) the fate of Earth would land most directly on Tremayne's shoulders.

All in all, Tremayne screwed the pooch. Repeatedly. That's the only conclusion I can come to.

Perhaps, but there seemed no need to do this. This is an extremely involved arrest procedure, the kind of thing better suited to an elaborate sting operation than the simple arrest of a single blip. In special cases, perhaps this would be done, but the intel Roger's people had didn't indicate that this was a special case. Far from it, in fact - their preliminary investigation indicated no Underground presence here, and thus no backup for Devlin. A simple, straightforward squad arrest - what was attempted on the Quad, the standard procedure in such cases - was prescribed by standing procedures. The lockdown of the campus was a precautionary measure, intended to snag any members of the Underground they might have missed in their initial sweep, but they really didn't expect to find any. They were just doing what the book says to do.

You have to understand - as a general rule, telepaths on the run don't make close friends among the normals. There was no reason, based on past history, for the Corps to expect Devlin to have such a large, loyal and exceptional group of friends. Certainly they knew about the Duelists' Society, having had an agent in the school staff for a few weeks, but come on - if you were a highly-placed law-enforcement official would you take a group of high school students who fancy themselves "duelists" seriously?

>People disappear all the time, the Psi Corps might
>never have been suspected by any but his allies in the Underground.

... er, if Devlin abruptly disappeared, I should think Amanda, for one, would considerably more than suspect the Corps.

Yes, Roger did screw up. He failed to react flexibly enough when the situation changed; his first indication of trouble should have been the unexpected and unusual resistance put up by Devlin's companions at the time of his arrest, to say nothing of the identity of one of them. (The fault there is not entirely his; he wasn't informed by the arresting officer of Amanda's claim, and the fact that she's a princess isn't kept in the general school files - Roger would have had to crosscheck with Immigration & Naturalization Services or recognize the name "Dessler" to realize that immediately.)

When it became clear to him who Amanda was, he should have released her, but at that point, the damage was already done, so he decided he might as well keep her a while longer and see what he could get. This, too, was an error in judgment, but by then he was angry about the whole situation and not thinking clearly.

I'm not sure I get your context, but off the top of my head, "mu" is a Greek letter, a shorthand for "um... both, either, your question is unanswerable", and a mythical Lost Continent like Atlantis and Lemuria.

I thought "Mu" (or "Moo") was the name of some demon off some cartoon show in the last couple of years... I don't think I'm thinking of Aku from from Samurai Jack, but I don't know... Anyway, I guess that's not what I was thinking of. :)

I own all of the commercially released J&TH audio and video cassettes. I also have a complete run of the show on nth gen tape from another fan. And a fairly complete selection of the songs from the show that I duped onto cassette from my VCR back in the 80s when it was first run.

I don't feel very guilty about it.

actually, I can top that. I saw Josie and the Pussycats on TV which was pretty much source for Jem. I had nothing against J&tH... the show was big on WAFF, but the music (especially that written for the Holograms) rocked.

Sailor Goon is a fansub parody of Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. Whenever a Sailor Scot (Failure Scout in the fansub) would transform, the subtitle would be quoting some other transformation sequence, such as:

"Sailor Mammary: maximize!"
"It's Morphin time!"
"For the honor of Greyskull!"

etc.

One of them was Jem's transformation call ("Synergy: showtime!" comes to mind, but I don't remember if that's right or not). I recognized it, and laughed, but I think I was the only one who did.

I remain *consistently* amused that the villain of Jem and the Holograms shares his name with one of the foremost proponents of Open Source software-- Eric Raymond. :)

The fact that J&TH Eric leads the Misfits against the slick, shiny, manfactured front of Jem and Co. (and the philanthropic work of Jessica Benton) amuses me even more.

The Witches of Dathomir are Force-using spiritualists, in the Expanded SW Universe, native to the primitive population of the planet Dathomir, whose teachings were started by a female Jedi who was stranded or somesuch on their planet. The Witches prefer to stay on Dathomir; however, a Dark Side-using clan of Witches, called the Nightsisters, made their way off of the planet and served the Empire before being mostly annihilated. The few that remain have been trying to resurrect the Nightsisters, and have been taking even male Force-sensitives as students.

First things first. FUUUCCKK!!! Talk about intense. I haven't seen action like this since Twilight.

I like how it started off with the aftermath of the night before. All the relationships gaining strength from what happened to them. Then Janice looks out the window, and there are Psi Cops everywhere.

Watching all the kids work towards escaping was brilliant, especially when different groups had plans crossing over with one another. Dorothy's was quite impressive. Why is it that everyone makes the mistake of assuming robots are covered by the First Law?

Aya, a Vice Admiral? Damn that's scary, although I like the names everyone gives her. I was hoping she'd pound the Earthforce ships, but what did happen was just as funny.

When Corwin didn't go for the hyperdrive controls, I actually remembered how the wonderful authors didn't tell us where all the Reflex engines where. Then he shows up behind the defense lines, races in at high speed and pulls everyone out, and fires off a REFLEX CANNON on the way out! As I expected, Gryph didn't chew him out for it either. There are times when rules have to be broken, and Gryph has proven this often enough himself.

Nice appearance by Truss, who did a great job in making Tremayne even more of a mess then he already was. Bets on what side he takes in reporting this little incident?

Good catch on the references, but you left out 'Bandit Killer' as one of Lina's monikers.

However, Aya is neither Lina Inverse nor Granny Weatherwax; she only has the equivalent amount of 'respect' of either one. She is not (quite) as impulsive as Lina, she is nowhere near as wise or understanding of 'headology' as Weatherwax is, and she's not as razor-sharp intelligent as either one. She is cunning and headstrong enough for both, though.

I don't have a clue what we'd do with a witch in UF, but we -may- or -may not- actually have a Lina Inverse in a future story. Stay tuned.

Correction: I don't know what we'd do with Esmerelda 'Granny' Weatherwax in UF. This is not your generic witch...

...Well, in her case, you don't do anything with her. Granny Weatherwax is the only one who decides what she's doing. And I, for one, will gladly go around the other side of the mountain to avoid either getting in the way, or worse, getting involved.

Except for the fact that niether Kate nor Utena OWN a dog, I'd have to agree with you. Come to think of it, Dot's the only one with a NORMAL pet at this point... Appologies to Nall and whatever that... that... whatever of Janice's is.

Heh... I could see Utena having a dog. She seemed to get on well enough with the Beagle of the Lens, and overall she strikes me as more of a dog-oriented person - blunt, unsophisticated, proud of it. :)

If Kaitlyn ever has a pet, odds are it won't be what you and I would call "normal". :)

I've spent enough time in the company of cats, including being an on-again, off-again cat slave owner to be thoroughly terrified of any feline with a Lens.

The main problem for me was, the more I thought about it, the more the mental image warped into a Frazetta painting. :)

And then, while making sure I was spelling 'Frazetta' right, I was silly enough to go to his site and stumbled on this:

http://www.frankfrazetta.com/gallery/lithographs/lith_120_countess.jpegx

(remove the x at the end when the 404 comes up)

And I thought I was just kidding.

True... No one in their right mind would call Starscream "Normal" let alone a PET. That would DEFINATLY be hazardous to one's health. ^_^

Actually, if -Wapiko- was the one making the decision, she'd make a pet of every animal life form in the universe.

No, this Gyopi is a gift, and it will be given when her parents think Wapiko's attention span is long enough to take care of an actual pet.
