This is precisely what it is. You nailed it in one.

With the caveat that when you say "in the Balkans" it isn't just that thematically; it has all the batshit insane folklore and mythology that comes from the pure, uncut Slavic tradition of that sort of thing. We're talking dark forests where darker things lurk. We're talking bogs and mists and demons. We're talking serious dudes with serious beards drinking serious drinks before going out into a winter storm to do some serious shit that they'll never, ever talk about again but that they'll see every time they close their eyes until they die.
