>I don't want my space battle scenes to be like that to read or >to write, and that's why - and I don't mind admitting it - I >deliberately eschew realism in that area. :) > In my mind, UF was, is, and always will be Space Opera. Yes, there are parts of it that venture closer to light SF/Fantasy, not to mention the bits of Film Noir and Crime Drama, but for me Suspension of Disbelief is one of the fundamental requirements for even looking at the UFverse. I certainly enjoy it when it's less so, but it never has bothered me when things are just completely outside the realm of even improbability. The only thing that would bother me is if continuity and character were violated, but for the most part that hasn't happened (and those few times it has, either it's been a setup, a "dream sequence", or you coming out and saying "oops, this needs to be retconned to make it fit with everything else - I'll get back to you on that"). Even the great "reshaping" at the end of UF4, and the implications that the entire universe's history changed at that moment doesn't bother me, as it was a one-shot deal, and it was one of the earliest pieces to boot.Besides, as much as a good space battle scene is fun to read, it's the people involved with it that make it that much more compelling. Who cares about a big furball of space fighters all piloted by Generic Pilot v2.3? Unless there's someone important in the mix, it can handled in a sentence or two and then moving on to more important bits...
