Forgive me if this has been said before, but pretty much anything from Starcraft, as long as its via Carbot Animations.

Well. We already have Roman Torchwick folded into Zuse in An Avatar in New Avalon, so there is a precedent... I would love to see anyone else from RWBY show up. I can just see Weiss and Jaune as Duelists, for example. And maybe Ruby -- I'm sure she has the self-control to not shoot an opponent (or the audience) during a Rose Duel.

By an odd coincidence, one of the things that drives me frickin' crazy about that show is that, since Ruby uses her whatever-that-thing-is's gun function as a maneuvering aid about half the time, she is in fact shooting up the whole neighborhood any time she has a fight scene. In that first episode she's firing high-powered rifle rounds in all directions at random without anyone, including the animators, ever seeming to give any consideration to the self-evident fact that they've all got to be hitting something somewhere. That's... not very heroic, and I have to believe was not the intent.

I shouldn't read these forums so soon after breakfast; on my first read-through this came out as "without hitting anyone, including the animators".

Might make her a better prospect for one of those "you can always tell where they've been" teams, though. Maybe that's one of her psionic-powered skills, "avoid innocent bystanders (most of the time)"...?

Given that the ammunition for Crescent Rose seems to be as much Dust-based as any other weapon in RWBY, I suspect that the "bullets" may in fact be "magical" effects that are specifically-targetted and harmless to anything else.

But that's just me going for a RoosterTeeth No-Prize.

And it doesn't cover Nora's grenade launcher, which launches visible grenades. With little hearts on them. Then again, she doesn't spam her targets like Ruby does...

From what I've read, the majority of personal weapons in RWBY have some Dust component involved with them, even if it's not directly noticeable. Having it stored in cartridges and shells (like Crescent Rose's bullets, and Ember Celica's shells) would make it easily reloadable and transportable, though requiring some mechanism or time to swap out types. Unlike Weiss's Myrtenaster, which has the 6-Dust chamber design for flexibility at the cost of not being able to reload as easily in the heat of battle (that I've seen so far). I would assume, being skilled with their respective personally-built weapons, Ruby and Yang can control whether or not an actual projectile gets expelled when propulsive effects are desired.

With the caveat that I have yet to watch RWBY the whole way through, I was under the impression that the characters' weapons were heavily inspired by the Cartridge system from the Nanoha franchise. The Cartridges were effectively high-tech mana potions, fed into a weapon to give a temporary boost of power, which is what I assumed Ruby was doing.

Speaking of, it would be interesting to see what the Belkan Knights would do in UF, especially the Iron Knight, Vita. Pretty much the simplest explanation of Vita is "we successfully* constructed a hybrid of the GaoGaiGar and the Alt Eisen, in the form of a 12-year-old girl"

*If you measure success in terms of property damage.

   I thought Subaru was GaoGaiGar-tan.

And honestly, I'd like to see Nanoha in it, as well. The series as a whole seems to me like it would fit quite well in UF.

I assume however that the events of the first two series would take place somewhere like New Japan rather than Tomodachi, where someone like Belldandy would notice little girls shooting magical blasts at each other, and do something kind yet firm about it. That would probably short-circuit the entire plot.

I believe the meme replacing Vita's Graf Eisen with the Goldion Hammer is what inspired StrikerS to go the full monty with Subaru. That and I didn't figure the SRW references would resonate here very much.

As for Nanoha in general, the series' tone of "everything this girl does is right, because we said so" might rub Gryphon the wrong way as much as TLOK's "everything this girl does is wrong, because we said so". On the other hand, cleaning up the Original Creator's Shenanigans has led to some of EPU's best stuff in the past, so it could go either way, I suppose.

Maybe it's because I'm getting old, but I find that kind of thing is harder and harder work these days. TLOK is just about killing me, although that's at least partly because I can't discard the canon wholesale for reasons.

More practically, I seem to recall being warned on this very board once never to watch Nanoha because it will pretend to be my friend and then crush my soul. I'm not sure what that means, but it sounds very negative to me.*

I suspect they were referring to StrikerS, and/or the manga. StrikerS has a despicably cruel villain (we're talking "makes-Akio-look-like-a-nice-guy" levels of evil) who spends a solid 12 episodes abusing the characters they've spent the first 12 episodes building up. The manga, meanwhile, keeps having characters pick up the Idiot Ball and then getting hospitalized for it.

If you were going to investigate the franchise, I would recommend starting (and ending) with A's, the second season. It has the best representation of the characters and the least amount of soul-crushing.

As as a starting (and ending) point is great, but if you *really* must have the full background, there are movie versions of both the first and second seasons out now that... are rather remarkable improvements in some ways on the original anime, especially graphics-wise. Granted they don't have quite as much background/filler, but they're perfectly acceptable jumping off points, in my humble opinion.

If the creative staff (or anyone else, for that matter) is interested, I could provide links to streaming video of both the original series and the movies, with subtitles. I'll leave it to G to decide whether I should post them as links or in PMs.

If I do link them, I should forewarn people that, although the sites I use are reasonably safe, normal precautions should be taken. Adblock, no clicking of banners or suspect links, no-script, you know the measures I mean.

Well, yeah, of course the animators weren't thinking about it. I'm not sure they're capable of thinking about anything except how to get the num-nums out of their sippy cups.

Back on topic: Wallace and Gromit. They work with Skuld. You know it, I know it. Hell, Skuld probably co-authored Electronics For Dogs...

They have Opinions about mental health conditions like depression, social anxiety, and so forth (namely that they don't exist and are evidence only of weak character); however, this is not the time or the place to discuss them. Only really mentioned it for reasons of full disclosure.

My first thought was 'Dust is multi-purpose', like the explanation already in this thread. On the other hand, Glinda was ripping Ruby a new one after the fight. Maybe not just because there's some scythe marks in the street :)

This is probably unnecessary if you're a RWBY fan, but, well, first episode of the new volume goes up tonight.

One that I just thought of, that I think would be *perfect*, the head of the Banzai Institute in 2404, a distant cousin of a recent newly hired professor at Satori Mandeville: Sir Brian May, OBE. (He's not a neurosurgeon *now*, but a lot can happen in 400 years...)

It'll never get written, because the writers who work in the particular style he'd be best suited for or, indeed, would be at all interested in his source materiel are no longer with the production team (that's not a dig at Ben or Phil; not all writers are all things to all people)...

... but for the past couple months I've been thinking I'd really like to see Jack Donaghy, GENOM's Vice-President of Eastern Spiral Arm Television and Microwave Oven programming.

Part of me really wants to know what Marika Kato and the crew of the Bentenmaru (and the Hakuoh Academy Yacht Club, which sounds like the kind of bunch that'd go right well when set down alongside Hokago Tea Time and the Sensha-Do club) are up to....

Moodwise, at least, yeah. Mouretsu Pirates' space-side setting and involvement would seem to require placing the characters out in the Big Universe, but I could easily see the Yacht Club at DSM. Perhaps the Bentenmaru and the other originals were outsiders brought in as part of the fight against the Cardassians, a la the Flying Tigers?

Sadly, the review I posted of the show when I first watched it didn't garner much interest.

Oh, wild out-of-left-field wouldn't-it-be-cool-if suggestion, that may be so obscure Gryphon will have never heard of it...

The titular band from Gael Baudino's 1987 novel Gossamer Axe. (Quick reference here.) Because UF can always use more kick-ass bands.

That's not really that much of an achievement; I've never heard of most of the nominations that have turned up in these threads. :)

Nor have I, sometimes... but then, I don't get a lot of UF references overall because our reference pools have a smaller overlap than I'd like.

If you can find a copy of the book, though -- long out of print, sadly -- I highly recommend it. And I'm thinking they could easily be another Diqiu band, with some unfriendly part of the spirit world substituting for the Sidh realm...

I actually owned a copy once, although I couldn't tell you whether I sold it or if it is in storage. As I recall, it came out in that era where almost all urban fantasy novels involved the Sidhe and the Pacific Northwest.

(Probably due to the Emma Bull/Charles De Lint influence, I'm guessing).

However, if you can get past the somewhat heavy-handed moralizing, I'd think Mercedes Lackey's SERRAted Edge books might be even more suitable for UF. The elves in question aren't in a band, but they DO race stock cars....

Yes, but Christa was such a Mary Sue, we really don't need to introduce her to UF. I am quite familiar with the book. I love it dearly, for a bunch of reasons, many having to do with my friends in College. But I don't think she needs to be in UF. Monica, Devi, Boo-boo and Melinda, perhaps. But not Christa. :}

If it's in storage, and it's in good condition, it's possibly reasonable valuable. I've seen used copies going for $60.

>(Probably due to the Emma Bull/Charles De Lint influence, I'm

Emma Bull set _War for the Oaks_ in Minneapolis, I thought. And DeLint mostly alternated between Ottowa and Newford (which is fictional and could be ANYWHERE).

Why yes, you have both managed to pull out quite a LARGE chunk of my adolescent reading habits here. ;)

...No.

Yes, I read them. Even at the time, they seemed somehow...merely adequate. And these days...no. Just no. They were so mediocre as to be boring. Also, they had an awful lot of Lackey going, "Hmm, can't figure out what I want to do with this character that's interesting...I know, I'll TORTURE THEM SOME MORE." Like Vanyel in the Heralds of Valdemar, only with even less reason.

I'll admit to being more fond of the Tannim duology. Not so much for the main character, but for Chinthliss, the Chinese dragon with a fondness for wearing Armani suits when in human form. He was... amusing.

Ooh, now that's a book I haven't re-read in a very long time. I can see the possibility, although I always thought (in hindsight, since I read them much later) the Axe would be a better fit with Misty Lackey's Urban Elves yarns.

Well, since this thread's seeing some life after a short hibernation, I'll throw one out there:

I've been a bit surprised that the ladies of the AMP (Silent Mobius) haven't made an appearance as part of the IPO (or similar type organization). Quite a few different flavors of magic/sorcery/divine powers, cyborg strength, computer skillz (to put it mildly), plus whatever the hell Rally Cheyenne is.

If they've made an appearance, even in reference, I don't recall, and I can't remember if this has been asked (and been rejected) before.

Hammer Time: Book 3. Also referenced in Cybertron Dreams, but that's been deprecated.

I can't take credit for knowing that offhand, by the way. I knew it was around, but I didn't know where, so I searched the site for "subspace synchotron" nand went from there.

EDIT: UGH, and it turns out I was completely confusing Silent Mobius with Sol Bianca. That's on me, everyone. I did that. Please disregard.

Lebia Maverick has been met briefly (she works for the IPO) in one of Geoff's stories a while back. Larry always had plans for Rally Cheyenne, but that's sort of laid fallow these past decades. ^_^;

That, and various Spinners show up, and I believe R-Type had developed a new one for G to use during Checkmate.

If the local Home for Abused Characters has space for them, Aldnoah Zero has a lot of people looking for writers who will treat them more kindly.

One coldly rational strategist (has anyone seen Inaho's ears? If he was a surakite Vulcan it would explain a lot), one princess willing to take up a grenade launcher, one pre-teen maid who can drive a HUMMV in ways Jeremy Clarkson would be awed by... actually, let's just take the lot shall we?

Admittedly at the current rate most of them would need to sort out their details in Valhalla but Saazbaum might be a candidate for Akio to recruit - Slaine too although for other reasons.

With two members of NAPD's Crime Lab harnessing the Speed Force, I'm surprised the Rogues aren't around. A purely artificial environment like New Avalon's seems tailor-made for the Weather Wizard, and half the Rogues could easily be meets for Blue Sun or one of the other groups.

Something to keep in mind there is that we haven't really spent a lot of time in New Avalon ever since CSI:NA ended, and the times we have have not exactly focused on the supervillainy parts but more on the weird occulty parts. Although AINA is likely to change that.

... actually.

Do places count as characters? Can we request more of them? Because I goddamn love New Avalon and the whole Dyson Sphere Republic thing. So I'd like to request New Avalon.

Given how things can sometimes diverge from the original plans, this is not really an exact answer for you, but from what I recall of the various "teaser videos" in this section of the forum, we'll be seeing quite a lot of New Avalon as part of NF.

And it doesn't look all that pretty. In just Trailer 5, which seems to focus largely on New Avalon I count at least four factions (Covenant, Big Fire, Federated Nazis, and Zod).

That is pretty freaking metal, though the exposed (?) cleavage in her biosuit leads to all kinds of odd questions. Is it a cosmetic mod to the front of the suit for her "badass image", or is she so damn metal that she doesn't mind getting the flu and a contact rash after every performance?

I've seen a couple of renditions of Quarians like this (one of which was a very nice display), and it seems to be either a clear piece of material over the cleavage, or a "flesh"-colored piece, providing an illusion of skin.

(Flesh in quotes because, despite the cornucopia of Rule 34 material out there featuring Tali, we really don't know what color Quarians' skin is. It could be transparent for all we know, which would give some Commander Sheppards a very strange fetish.)

I'm guessing option A, as I can't see any kind of muscle tone on those bits. Would be pretty metal for option B, though I expect the flu and rash would get tiring after a few times through.

I haven't seen the film, but even from the trailer, if the setting were any more obviously Republic City ca. 300 ASC, you'd be able to see the Aang statue in the establishing shots. :)
