Otherwise it'll spot the ".jpg" (or whatever) and automatically inline the image instead of obeying the "link:" tag.

(There's another trick to get it to display that instead of interpreting it - there are special amper symbols to make shown square brackets instead of delimiting markup with them.)
See, this is one of the several reasons why I've never seriously looked into replacing this crocky old forum. You keep something around for 12 years, you learn some of its tricks... :)
