>Honestly, half the time I was watching 2.0 I was just assuming that >Anno had read NXE and was doing a bizarre homage-homage. I have to admit that would be charmingly perverse, especially considering that NXE was sort of an antihomage. If I were doing it again,2.0 style, it'd be even more so; in fact, it'd be a lot more like Evangelion Victory, the Gaogaigar-esque parody we did a trailer for in one of the season-3 Bonus Theater! segments. Instead of riffing on Shinji's arrival in Tokyo-3, the first episode would involve him and, in fact, the whole NERV Japan team arriving in Worcester, having got out of Tokyo-3 just ahead of the city ceasing to be there and fled to the organization's next-biggest base. There, a very bored Jon Ellison would've been waiting around for six months for the Angels to hit North America, unaware (as indeed all of NERV is unaware) that the only reason they're going to Japan in the first place is because Professor Ikari keeps the MacGuffin in his desk and they're never going to appear anywhere else. Meanwhile, in Europe, the Honourable Derek Croft (only son of Lara, Baroness Croft) and Asuka Soryû have been similarly cooling their heels since the project began and are, if anything, going even more stir-crazy than Jon. In addition to not having any giant aliens to fight, they also dislike each other intensely - though not as intensely as DJ dislikes having to live in Germany, which he (rather unfairly) describes as "a fussy, procedure-obsessed wasteland, probably the only civilised country on Earth capable of producing creatures like you, Soryû." Eventually, after Shinji, Rei and Jon's first contretemps with the forces of giant incomprehensibility, someone will twig that it's something about the Japan team the Angels are following and the Europe group will also get moved to the US, at which point much wackiness ensues. Poor DJ, in particular, will be thrilled to be getting the hell out of Germany, but at the same time crushed that it's not to go home, and that he has to take die Walküre along. Good times. --G. -><- Benjamin D. Hutchins, Co-Founder, Editor-in-Chief, & Forum Admin Eyrie Productions, Unlimited http://www.eyrie-productions.com/ Ceterum censeo Carthaginem esse delendam. |

As one of the forum's resident Jews, I can't decide what's more amusing - Asuka's speech about what she won't do on the Sabbath, or the fact that she used the Ashkenazi Shabbos, rather that the more common Shabbat or the english Sabbath. The fact that she's Catholic is just the icing on the cake :) Offsides [...] in order to be a realist you must believe in miracles. -- David Ben Gurion EPU RCW #π #include <stdsig.h> |

I shall do necromancy to this thread, because it's my party and I'll cry if I want to! I still haven't seen the Rebuild of Evangelion movies (because why would I do that to myself :), but in conjunction with this odd impulse to re-experience NXE, I have seen a lot of mostly-context-free connected artwork, courtesy of danbooru. I'm particularly fond of this one (SFW, but a lot of stuff there isn't, you know the drill); that face says to me, "Let's face it, this is not the worst thing you've caught me doing," which is an attitude I like in an Asuka. (Also, I kind of dig the low-budget plugsuit repairs. It's nice that she cared enough to colormatch her duct tape. I further choose to believe that she has Mio Sakamoto Eye, not an injury.) Also this one, to my comment upon which I have nothing much to add. I think that's basically UF-Rei's resting face, actually. The Sith Code teaches us: Don't start none, won't be none. :) At any rate, it's all got me thinking a bit more about the joke I made a few years ago, about what an NXE reboot would look like: >>>Poor DJ, in particular, will be thrilled to be getting the >>>hell out of Germany, but at the same time crushed that it's not to go >>>home, and that he has to take die Walküre along. Good times. Upon reflection, I think if I were going to reset NXE, I'd probably skip the mutual abrasion phase, particularly if we were first seeing DJ and Asuka on screen some time after their actual meeting. It's, y'know, we've done that. And besides, she'd be just as glad to be getting out of Germany as he is. Actually, a series set at a NERV base where nothing much ever happens would be amusing in a Non-Adventures of Wonderella kind of way. It's not a joke that would be sustainable, but it would have worked as an NXE Bonus Theater!! segment if I'd thought of it at the time. DJ and Asuka sitting around a structure like the old Wedge Booth No. 1 in the secret EVA hangar EuroNERV set up in the old U-boat pens at Kiel, bored out of their skulls, playing cards and wondering why Japan HQ is getting all the love. Maybe sitting around in their EVAs playing giant cards just for the change of pace. Cobwebs on the gantries. A slow, maddening drip somewhere in the shadowy background. Sausages and black coffee. Asuka shooting her initials into the wall out of sheer boredom, Sherlock Holmes style. Day counter in the lower left corner slowly advancing, as the only visible change to the scene (apart from the constantly changing covers of the books they're both reading) is that by Day 255 it's becoming obvious that DJ's going to need to start shaving soon. The first rule of EVA Club is you don't talk about EVA Club. Heh. I don't even need to write that, I just did. :) >>I might pay to see that. If only because the production values would >>be better this time around. Does DJ crush the US armed forces again? >>Maye this time with more Michael Bay(tm)? Hey, he blew up the AT&T Building last time! That was pretty baytastic. Anyway, he probably wouldn't need to fight the US Army the second time around, although he might have had some trouble with the authorities in Germany before they left, particularly if he got bored enough to find out how much he could really get an EVA up to on a derestricted Autobahn. "It was a little misunderstanding with 147 Mecklenburg cops! I thought they were soldiers." >(Also: my mental image of Exodus 2.0 Rei is basically >Rei's body inhabited by the spirit of Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski. >Possibly because of all the painkillers she's been on since the EVA-00 >Test Incident. Rei abides.) ASUKA Also, let's not forget that keeping wildlife, a flightless Antarctic waterfowl, for, uh, domestic, you know, within the city, that's not legal either. I've just finished rereading NXE in its entirety over the past month while stuck in the barracks at a tech school and I can honestly say I'm happy to hear your collective re-imagining of NGE is going to stay the same. To be honest I like it better than the source material. (after watching the original series I can't stomach the thought of watching the series or its spin offs/remakes I wound up hating it that much.) For me the most interesting part of NXE was the ultimate redemption plot. Kudo's to whoever thought that up. ------------ ~If you want my input the red explosions are really pretty and if you did enough you might live for a few more excrutiating seconds My not so humble contribution to cyberspace http://cgwolfgang.deviantart.com/ |

>Actually speaking of movie remakes and the cool stuff that >materializes on the blu-ray dvd's. Would the be any chance of the NXE >blooper reel, which was mentioned years ago, ever be released? :D The "blooper" gag got done about as much as it was ever going to get done in the season-3 Bonus Theater! segments; what was going to be on the "DVD edition" of Apotheosis Now was mainly a metafictional mock "making of" documentary that seemed like a really funny idea at the time we thought of it, but never really gained traction. At this point it's probably reasonably safe to assume it's dead, although you never entirely know around here. There were also a couple of deleted scenes, in proper DVD fashion, but, er... I seem to have misplaced them. I remember one was a longer version of the dream sequence with Rei and the phantom DJ (hmm, that sounds like a C-list DC Comics hero from the '60s, The Phantom DJ, appearing in clubs and spinning records from beyond the grave!), and there was an earlier version of the scene up the radio antenna... ah well. Probably no great loss. I do hate it when I manage to lose files, even if I'm never going to use them for anything, though. --G. -><- Benjamin D. Apologies for performing threadromancy, but 3.0's just come out and while I haven't watched it yet, I want to mock it a bit and surely we don't need another thread for that quite yet. To celebrate the release of 3.0 - You Will (Not) Understand - someone or other released a custom-skinned Android phone. The custom skin has now been released (or pirated?) and my brother got his hands on it: "...and get a user interface designer in on this project -quick- because, -damn-." |

LAST EDITED ON Feb-21-13 AT 08:44 AM (EST) >... having just stumbled across the trailer for Evangelion 2.0: You >Can (Not) Advance over at ye Apple website, I just wanted to >reassure everybody that, although I fully understand Mr. Anno's >motivation this time (at least in the abstract), I'm not going to >follow his lead and do NXE all over again. I missed this thread the first time around (since, at the time, I wasn't really reading the forum at all anyway), but the timing in which I did see it is... interesting. See, my wife has been following the series in a meta way -- we haven't sat down to watch any Rebuild yet, and probably won't until it's completed later this year -- but she's watched clips, read summaries, and so on. She pointed out to me some story and character decisions that differ from the original in a particular way, and a couple of peculiar art and design things, along with some altogether new events at the end of 3.0, which can be read to imply that Rebuild is not, in fact, a remake of the original series. It's a sequel. About Shinji trying to use instrumentality to redo the events over and over again to try to get things right -- that is, the original Shinji, who is not present in the series as Shinji, but as Gendou. Some specifics: Gendou's face is slightly different, more round, and his eyes are different, too, from the design in the original series. If it were any other production company? I wouldn't ascribe much to it. But between Anno's obsession with detail -- up there with Kubrick -- and another change (instead of Gendou changing his surname to Ikari, it's now his family name, and Yui changed her name instead... from Ayanami), not to mention all the things that have been added to what the Evas are and what an Impact (in the Second/Third/etc. sense)... I'm inclined to agree. Giving NXE this treatment? Would be weird. To say the least. "Mathematics brought rigor to economics. Unfortunately, it also brought mortis." - Kenneth Boulding |
