"A Few Thoughts on Girls und Panzer"

LAST EDITED ON Aug-12-14 AT 04:07 PM (EDT)

(Strange choice of title. Not Girls and Tanks - or actually, if you want to translate literally, Girls and Tank - or Mädchen und Panzer, or even whatever the Japanese for Girls and Tanks would be. But I digress.)

I was just going to resurrect the thread about this show from the General board last year, because it's my party and I'll necro if I want to, but since most of my reply ended up being half-serious speculation about how the premise would intersect with the UF universe, I figured I'd put my remarks here instead. I just saw a little bit of this, which has left me in a better position to remark than I was last year (not that that stopped me, but :).

>Nishizumi Miho has transferred to Oorai Girls High
>after an Incident led to her quitting her previous school's winning
>sports team, precisely because Oorai doesn't have a team for
>that.

Poor Miho. She'll never be over Macho Grande.

>And then the school restarts said team and drafts Miho and her new
>friends as the first core element of their resurrected Tankery
>(Sensha-dou) squad.
>
>Which is, well, what the UFverse calls panzerdueling. A sport
>featuring tanks fighting. Run by high schools.

You know, I think the only reason why DSM doesn't have a panzerdueling team is because no other school would start one, so they wouldn't have anyone to play against.

I suppose that wouldn't stop them from playing it on an intramural basis, though, like the regular Duelists. They'd need more tanks, though. Right now the school only has the one. And then the kids who are into articulated mecha would want an intramural Friday Night Firefight league, and then there would be a four-way schism between the FNF kids who wanted to use Arm Slaves, the ones who wanted to use Mobile Suits, the ones who plumped for Miscellaneous Battlemovers and/or Landmates, and the ones who disdained piddling around with all that Fisher-Price stuff and insist on heavy-to-assault Destroids because this is high school, not kindergarten. And then you'd have the wrangling with the Aviation Club over whether Veritech fighters are aircraft or light Destroids, and the one insane kids who wants to use a Southern Cross Veritech hover tank even though it couldn't possibly pass even the most rudimentary safety inspection... well, in the UF universe it would all just get horribly complicated.

And then you would get the really crazy kids who wanted to set up an Anti-'Mech Infantry club.

None of which would actually be out of place as background wrangling in DSM Panic!, come to think of it, and would lead the first-generation Duelist alumni to think, Man, why didn't we think of that? every time they came back for a visit and found that it had advanced to another stage.

(I'm not saying any of this will happen, mind. Just that it could.)

It might be my favorite thing about the UF universe: That it's the kind of place where Girls und Panzer, Full Metal Panic!, and K-On! not only can all happen, but are probably all happening at the same school. :)

>The rest of this twelve-episode series chronicles Miho and company's
>efforts to put together the needed equipment and compete in this most
>Traditional of the feminine arts.
>
>(No, my tongue isn't in cheek. I make no warranty about the
>show's.)

There is almost certainly at least one planet in the UF universe where this is not even a joke, in much the same way that the traditional feminine arts in the Morita Empire on Ishiyama include flower arranging, the tea ceremony, calligraphy, musical theater, and psychic power armor combat.

Also, I should belatedly break this down.

>If you enjoy any subset of tanks,

Check!

>sports anime,

Uh... well, not really, I don't seek it out, but Princess Nine was cute...

>lighthearted WW2 movie montage music,

Check! (It did not escape my notice that the music in the opening scene of the first episode is a gleeful pastiche of Elmer Bernstein's The Great Escape score, presumably because it's the most recognizable WWII movie, even though it's not about tanks.)

>and the Cute Girls Doing Cute Things genre of anime,

And once again check.

And that doesn't even count the one kid who somehow got his hands on an OGRE. (Or maybe an OGRE that got its treads on a kid to "sponsor" it in the duels...)

Speaking of jokes that fell flat. :)

"Merkava" is a kind of tank. "Hokago Tea Time" is the band from K-On! Banter's not the same if you say it slower, Squiffy. Etc. :)

Merkava, I got. Sadly, this is one of those jokes where I'd need both halves of the joke to get the full effect of your wit.

... if in fact that's what it was.

I doubt Hōkago Tea Time play Armorsport anyway. You can't be a member of more than one after-school club at most schools. :)

(This doesn't change the fact that the rock-'n-roll-tank-girls image is a great one. They're just not the K-On! girls, they're some other high school light music club. Who have a tank. :)

Although, I fully expect that Tsumugi could order in a tank within about an hour should it become necessary to make the scene (or any other reason).

"Say, Mugi, why did the tank come with a full combat load of shells?" "Oh, better safe than sorry."

"This is probably a stupid question, but . . ."

Now you've got me thinking about what crew positions they would take if, for some preposterous reason,* they actually had to operate a tank. I think Mugi would have to be the loader - she's probably the only one of them who's actually strong enough. Ritsu would insist on command until she found out that the commander doesn't actually get to shoot the giant gun, at which point she would pawn it off on Mio, which, Grodd help them, means she has to talk on the radio** and Yui has to drive. Imagine Yui driving anything, much less a vehicle that can crush and/or knock down basically anything that happens to be in its way. It won't take them long to realize that this is a really bad plan and switch them, at which point Yui ends up in command of the tank.

Everyone would expect that to be a complete disaster, of course, until she stayed up all night the night before the game so Ui could read Guderian to her out loud (translating it on the fly from the original), at which point she's utterly brilliant at tankery - but after the game they'll discover she's forgotten how to read.

* Such as:

Mio looked puzzled. "What are you talking about, Nodoka? 'Challenge to Ōarai Girls' Academy'?"

"I've never even heard of that school," Yui mused.

"There's a surprise," Azusa muttered under her breath.

"Why don't you ask your club president?" asked Nodoka, sounding genuinely annoyed for one of the very few times Mio could remember. "After all, according to this, she issued it," she went on, slapping a slightly crumpled sheet of paper down on the table.

"Huh?" said Ritsu, coming back from her drummer trance as the impact jarred the table. She paused her iPod and took the earbuds from her ears. "Oh, hey, Nodoka. What's up?"

"Nodoka-chan says you challenged some other school to a duel or something!" Yui declared.

"Huh?" Ritsu repeated. Confused, she looked from Yui's face to the piece of paper, still partly concealed by Nodoka's flattened, splay-fingered hand. "Oh that! Yeah, you remember, those girls in the green and white uniforms we met at SchoolFest? I challenged their Light Music Club to a battle of the bands."

Nodoka took off her glasses and pinched the bridge of her nose with a pained little sound. "No, Ritsu, you didn't. Did you even read the form before you signed it?" Putting her glasses back on, she glowered over them at the Light Music Club's president and told her, hands on hips, "You challenged their sensha-dō team to a match."

"WHAT!" said everyone else in the room.

" - 's that?" Yui went on after the others had finished.

"Uh... I did?" Ritsu hesitantly picked up the paper and read it over. "... Huh." She put it down and folded her hands behind her head, giving her bandmates a weak grin. "Guess I kinda did." She cringed slightly, instinctively expecting Mio to bash her on top of the head, but when it didn't come, she opened her eyes again and saw that her tall, raven-haired best friend was just looking at her with narrowed eyes.

"You are the dumbest person I have ever met," said Mio, in that too-calm tone of voice that meant she only hadn't hit Ritsu because she hadn't taken the reality of the situation fully on board yet.

"It was an honest mistake!" Ritsu protested. "Besides, they can't hold us to it, can they? We're not a sensha-dō club. Sakuragaoka High doesn't even have a sensha-dō club."

"They can and they will," said Nodoka flatly, folding her arms. "It's a matter of honor to them now. We'll have to forfeit, of course, because, as you say, we don't have any way of following through. It's extremely bad form, since we were the school issuing the challenge. The principal will be humiliated. If the administration at Ōarai really want to press the issue, they might even be able to get the school's charter revoked by the Board of Education."

"Revoked?!" Azusa burst out. "As in close the school?"

Nodoka nodded. "So I suggest, Ritsu, that you book yourself a ticket on the next train to Ōarai and get ready to do some serious groveling. It's a long shot, but if you explain your mistake and abase yourself enough, you might be able to convince them to let you work off the forfeit somehow and save the school."

Ritsu blinked, frightful images passing through her head; then she looked to her left and saw that Yui's face had gone blank and red, and concluded that much more frightful images of what might happen to her friend were passing through hers. That almost gave her a chuckle, even under the circumstances, but not quite. Most of her mind was too busy racing, slamming itself bodily against every closed door looking for a way out of the mess.

Before she could blurt any of her ideas out, though - particularly the one about moving the whole school to another country - Mugi spoke for the first time since Nodoka had dropped her bombshell. What she said was so completely out of context that it took everyone else in the clubroom a moment to realize that she wasn't talking to any of them; rather, she had her phone to her ear and was saying calmly into it,

"Hello! It's Tsumugi here. How are you today? I'm very well, thank you. If you have a moment, I have a small favor I need to ask of you. My friends and I have a little project for school that we need some special equipment for. Mm? No, not musical instruments, we have all of those we need. No, we're good on tea sets for the moment as well. We need a tank. What? No, not for storing liquids, an armored vehicle. Yes! Precisely. You do? What kind? Wait a moment."

Mugi lowered the phone, covering the mouthpiece with her palm, and said, "Nodoka-chan, would a 1945 Panther Ausführung G tank be suitable?"

"I... think so?" Nodoka replied hesitantly.

Mugi nodded and returned the phone to her ear. "Yes, I think that will do very nicely. Oh, how wonderful. Can you have it at my school by three o'clock tomorrow? Oh, that would be perfect. Thank you very much. Yes. I will. Take care! Bye!"

Then she switched off the phone, closed it, put it away, and beamed cheerfully at her bandmates. "There!" Seeing the incredulous looks she was receiving from all around her, Mugi hesitated, her smile becoming tentative. "... What?"

** Actually the Panther is a five-man tank, so Azu-nyan can do that.

Good grief, even when I'm talking about Girls und Panzer I end up talking about K-On! lately. I do apologize. It's just that it's the pleasantest surprise I've had in the new-media-discoveries department in such a long time (and Girls und Panzer is right behind it), and it came along at exactly the right time, when my fuse was burning really, really short regarding Other Matters.

The part of my brain that has never been able to perceive all the other things we ought to be doing instead is now insisting that this should be fleshed out into an all-up K-On! / Girls und Panzer crossover. The rest of my brain kind of wants to cry. :)

The obvious title would be Heavy Metal War. But without the part where the Constructicons come up with something that can give Ritchan the special powers of everyone else in the Light Music Club, because frankly that wouldn't be very useful.

Oh hey, I can't believe I didn't notice this before. Mio (the bassist of Hōkago Tea Time in K-On!) and Yukari (the loader of the Anglerfish team in Girls und Panzer) have the same family name, Akiyama.

The more I hear, the more I believe this needs to become A Thing That Exists. Maybe only as a series of minis (something lighthearted and fluffy*, maybe, to offset some of the more Serious Business stuff in the works?), maybe as a substory in FI.

*Because as we all know, tank combat is full of warm fuzzies.

As it happens, Phil and I do have plans for (respectively) the Girls und Panzer cast and the K-On! girls in FI already, but I was actually picturing Heavy Metal War as - brace yourselves, kids! - not part of UF. Just a straight K-On! / Girls und Panzer crossover, off in its own little early-21st-century world.

In Girls und Panzer it kind of IS, though.

Waiting with bated breath in both cases, I assure you, even though I've yet to watch either series.

So I'd gathered. :P But when a joke's that easy to make...

Thanks to these threads I'm now watching Girls und Panzer. I've seen a good bit of the K-On! as well, and the idea of their combined adorableness is slightly mind-bending.

This will lead to excellence.

So I went and looked up Girls und Panzer on Wikipedia, to see if there was an official US distro deal or anything (I've been out of that scene for a long time, I don't even know who the players are any more), and the first paragraph on the page mentions that the military tech advisor for the show worked on a couple of other anime projects. One of them was Strike Witches, of which we have heard on these boards before...

... and the other one is called Upotte!!. I can summarize this no better than the wikipedians already did:

"The series takes place at a school known as Seishou Academy. Unlike an average school, all the students are actually anthropomorphized guns, training to one day become a useful weapon."

That... what? Really, what? I think I have to track this down.

A good start for currently/recently aired stuff would be Crunchyroll for free streaming. Funimation, Aniplex, Media Blasters, Viz Media, and a few others are the major distributors nowadays (there was a storm of company shifts over the past decade-plus).

Mind, I haven't been watching much myself, but at least I prowl the Dealer's Room floors a lot...

Speaking of anthropomorphized weapons being given anime, there's the Farmville-Clone-From-Hell Kantai Collection, which features cute humanoid versions of WWII-era warships. While it's somewhat creepy (this being Japan, all the ships are IJN vessels, so none of them have real happy backgrounds), there's a certain je ne sais quoi about the way they handle the "living weapons" concept that could be put to good use somewhere, I think.

Wow.

I just... wow.

OK, this show is weird, but I have to say, there is some Grade A firearms nerdery involved in it. As the Wikipedia page implies, the girls have traits and personality quirks that are based on tongue-in-cheek personifications of qualities the firearms they're based on possess. The girl who is a Steyr AUG (which has interchangeable barrels) has two personalities, one timid almost to the point of paralysis and the other almost uncontrollably rash. The German guns are fantastically precise and accurate, but a bit cold and hard to like. M14 is loud and obnoxious but sturdily reliable and weirdly lovable. And so on. There is an entire story arc based on the facts that: the M16 was a bit crap when first introduced, but has seen much incremental improvement; and the L85 is fragile junk, but inspires a curious loyalty.

Unlike many niche products I enjoy, I can totally see why this show is not better-known and only ran for 10 episodes, but damn. For such a completely demented concept, Upotte!! is bizarrely endearing, at least if you're enough of a military firearms geek to get the jokes. (If you aren't, there's a lot of helpful exposition, but it would probably still be pretty tedious. Explained jokes just aren't jokes any more.)

I kind of like the way they did the GuP manga from the point of view of another of the main characters. To a certain extent, any differences in the storylines can be attributed to someone recollecting the events differently than someone else. :)

(Also, I am amused by the way the manga makes it much clearer that Hana chose to be the gunner not just because she decided high-caliber gunfire was cool after her first experience with it, but because it right turned her on. And that Miho evidently knows that, possibly even agrees with it, and finds both facts a bit embarrassing. It's always the quiet ones. :)

Does it? The anime scene was, I thought, crystal clear about this response. Did the manga somehow manage to make it even more amusing?

Maybe I just didn't notice as much in the TV version for some reason. (Certainly not the part about Miho's reaction to Hana's reaction; on TV she's too busy to react when it actually happens, and in their discussion later, she doesn't seem to notice the subtext at all.)
