"OWAW #17"

Coming tomorrow. Uh, later today. Tuesday.

Very small teaser!

For a moment they simply stood there, the Orussian wondering exactly what was going on, the Polonian looking oddly hesitant, until Wojtek made a low grumbling sound and nudged the back of Witolda's shoulder with his snout. When that didn't elicit any response, he grumbled louder, lowered his head, and rammed it squarely into the middle of her back.

"Ah!" Urbanowicz cried, skipping forward a pace. Thus prompted, she gave her partner a scathing look back over her shoulder and declared, "Yes, yes, I am doing!"

Turning back to Sanya, she took a deep breath, then straightened up to something close to a parade ground stance. "I am coming to do an apologize. You saved us big problem, over Freiburg, and I had... not been good company before that. You had every right to let me eat mistake, but gave help, instead. And I - we - have much thankful."

Sanya turned that over, her face still set in a guarded mask, then nodded before turning to go, walking to her launch stage and powering up her Striker's Miyafuji engine without further comment.

Stepping back to clear the way for her to depart, Witolda waited to see if the Orussian would actually say anything, but Sanya remained silent, simply taking her Fliegerhammer from its rack and taxiing for the runway. She didn't look behind her once before she lifted off into the early evening skies.

The Polonian witch and her familar watched her depart, not turning to look at each other until the Night Witch had receded to a dark speck that blended into the darkening sky. Wojtek's response was to drop to all fours, draw a deep breath through his nose, and then let it out in a loud snuffling WHUFF.

"I tried. Is not good enough, yes. But I tried." Biting her lip and looking away, Witolda refused to make eye contact with her familiar. "Is needing a new plan - I will do this. I promise. I will be doing better for next one."

One of my favorite things about Witolda, actually, is how deceptive she is. Not as a person, as a character. Sure, she speaks English with that comedy accent, but then English is at least her fourth language...

It's interesting to see Trude's reaction to her breakthrough, as well as how it affects Gryphon's lessons.

Hmm. Is Wilma matchmaking?

And Witolda manages a proper apology. Good for her.

Castle's liable to get a bit crowded if any of the temporary helpers decide they like it enough to attempt to stay :)

Good on Witolda for attempting (and at least partially succeeding?) in an apology and truce with Sanya; that looks like a lead in to some fun times.

All excellent, except for one rather minor thing, related to the above. Well, it's not not excellent, it's just a bit of a head scratch.
That part is 'неавити', which I can't make heads nor tails of. No matter what translation service I try to use, it returns, basically, 'huh?' Either on it's own or through what it DOES return making no sense, at least to me.
Splainy?

Might be a typo (a quirk in the production process makes putting Cyrillic writing in the actual story files harder than you would think); I'll check it. Otherwise, translations for those lines will be provided in the annotations Real Soon Now.

Yup, mangled Cyrillic markup. It's fixed now.

if there are any actual Russian-speakers out there, I'm really, really sorry about my pronunciation of the Orussian lines in the audio version. I am particularly conscious of the irony involved in the fact that the first one, just before it is delivered, is described by the narrator as perfect and unaccented, but hey. I did what I could.

>if there are any actual Russian-speakers out there, I'm really, really sorry about my pronunciation of the Orussian lines in the audio version.

Now, while this isn't my main reason to register here, it's one of secondary ones.

The Russian lines is... an atrocity of machine translation that I feel compelled to fix (or at least propose one)

"Выпей со мной, Ороссийская, за вечную вражду между нашими странами"
"За ненависть, Полечка"
"За красивых женщин"

Two important notes: Ороссийская sounds grating and may be grammatically incorrect. It means "female thing that's owned by Orussia", e.g Ороссийская территория - Orussian territory. Орусиянка is a more appropriate word for female person of ethical Orussian origin, and Орусская - with origin from Orussian empire.

Witolda's designation is even more of a mess. There's two possible designations for female from Poland - "Полька" and "Полячка". One is homonym for a dance, another is a bit outdated and may be contemptuous. Diminutive form of first I used in changed response, diminutive form for second one is "Полячечка" and it is indeed very contemptuous, and beyond patronizing. "Полечка" and "Полячка" are spoken a bit differently, one with soft L, another with hard-ish.

On this note, stirrings of my inner dead linguist are over. Thank you for attention.

   >an atrocity of machine translation

Sadly, I fear this phrase is sort of inherently redundant, at least as the state of the art currently stands.

Thanks for the corrections, though—nobody on the team speaks Russian (obviously :), so we had to work with the tools we had. I'll update the story sometime soon, though I probably won't re-record the audio.

What should your translator credit say? :)

There. I've finally had a minute to fix these.

>Two important notes: Ороссийская sounds grating and may be
>grammatically incorrect. It means "female thing that's owned by
>Orussia", e.g Ороссийская территория - Orussian
>territory. Орусиянка is a more appropriate word for female
>person of ethical Orussian origin, and Орусская - with origin
>from Orussian empire.

Based on this, I've used the first alternate you suggested there, since that's basically what I was trying for anyway—a geographical rather than political tag.

>Witolda's designation is even more of a mess. There's two possible
>designations for female from Poland - "Полька" and
>"Полячка". One is homonym for a dance, another is a bit

>changed response, diminutive form for second one is
>"Полячечка" and it is indeed very contemptuous, and beyond
>patronizing.

The original intent was that Witolda wouldn't quite be able to tell whether Sanya was being affectionate, patronizing, or both, and it sounds like the second one wouldn't leave much doubt, so I stayed with the first one.

Thanks for the fix!

On the subject of weird experimental stuff (since Planchard's using a VG-50): is there any chance you could butterfly a more modern version of the Parnall Peto into this for one of the British witches/navy-spirit KanColle oojamaflips? Iunno, I just think that a plane designed to be fired out of a submarine is the kind of thing that'd fit into the UF-verse in general.

((Also, it was equipped with an engine called the Armstrong Siddeley Mongoose, which is now my porn star name. =] ))

Interestingly (to me, anyway), there's an ep of Strike Witches in which a couple of the witches deploy from the Fusō submarine I-400 (the lead boat of the class of sub that Iona is in Arpeggio of Blue Steel). It's not clear whether the Strike Witches version of the I-400 class was actually designed as a submarine witchcraft carrier, or if they were just using the hangar intended for the Seiran float planes, as in the real world, but it worked pretty well in the role anyway. (And unlike seaplanes, Striker-equipped witches wouldn't have to be recovered by crane, amusing though the image is. :)

I work in an arcade. My brain lurched off on a tangent went to the... interesting mental image of a load of anime battleship gijinkas in a crane-grabber game. It certainly makes a change from those bug-eyed pill-looking abominations that seem to be everywhere these days...

Nipa, Amélie, and Princess? You spoil us so.

Though, in retrospect, it might have been funnier had it been Krupinski rather than Nipa who'd disturbed Trude's sleep. Ah well, I love Nipa so much...just be sure she's not allowed to cook.

Waltrud was shortlisted for the Legion of Substitute Witches, but since she'll almost certainly be coming to Minna and Mio's wedding next month, we decided to hold off.

With the surströmming there, I think it might be chemical warfare.

Surströmming, two cans no less, even if one is unopened, salt liquorice(which can be poisonous if you over-eat(and the level where 'over-eating' occurs varies from person to person)), and what looks like chocolate....that's not cooking, at least. Witches brew, maybe? Or as suggested, inventing some form of chemical warfare agent/nerve gas.
