Formerly the Untitled Thing. No last-minute teaser, there's actually nothing else in here that I wouldn't rather have the reader see for the first time in the actual release. Instead, I'll just say that it's nearly finished and will probably be out tomorrow.

Yay! Looking forward to it. =)

It's called Labor Day, I'm convinced, because I always have to work during it. So a new story would be quite welcome.

Well, there you go, then.

No audio today; it's too hot to record (the AC makes too much noise). It might not be ready until Friday, depending on how busy the next couple-three days are.

Just out of curiosity. Is it going to be addressed that we have two entirely separate origin stories for Kantai Collection now, in both OWaW and the Symphony, or is it not really an issue since they're not going to be meeting each other any time soon?

Wouldn't be a particular issue if they did, really. As a wise woman once said, parallel universes - it happens...

I have but one thing to say.

Damn well done Sir.

Also, you would hope now that Earth Force (and the Psi Corps) would learn "Don't piss off Corwin."

Somehow, I don't think that will ever sink in though.

See Comment.

They're too arrogant and convinced that they are the top of the food chain regardless of any evidence to the contrary. More than that, I suspect that far too many have their entire self-images built around their false assumptions of godlike superiority, and will do and believe anything to avoid facing the truth.

It is so unfortunate for them that in this case, their *opponent* actually *does* possess godlike powers. You can hear me playing the galaxy's tiniest violin for them. :)

It's actually more than that, I believe. I'm pretty sure some of the Psi Corps stories implied, if they didn't say outright, that the Psi Corps culture is very intentionally designed to compel its members into believing they're a superior race. That's what the people running it presumably believed themselves, of course, and indoctrination and programming is not just common but standard procedure there. They really DO believe they're the best, which serves them pretty well when subjugating masses and makes them horribly unprepared when facing true elite soldiers.

Much like the emotional devastation and despair the Nazis and citizens in Germany itself, who I believe were largely kept out of the loop on the real progress of the war, must have felt when the Americans, British, etc. on the west and the Russians on the east finally showed. (I am not an expert on WW2, mind you, but ISTR their losses weren't exactly in the papers.)

   That. Was. -EPIC-.

Reviving I-401 entirely by accident? Not-very-well-executed retreat and evade? Inadvertently dropping the "I am your God!" on to a whole -host- of unexpected Fog ships?

You were right, Gryph; Corwin was well and truly off his game. For good reason, and entirely understandably; but certainly off his game; at least for the first half.

But this was still -phenomenally- enjoyable. I got as far as this:
>>There were six of them that he could see: the carrier, the battleship, and
>>four much smaller vessels, each all but identical to the other three.

and realized -precisely- who those "four smaller vessels" must be. I didn't stop grinning from there.

I think what I like most about this piece, is how expertly the KanColle and Arpeggio aspects dove-tail together. The Fleet Girls used meshed perfectly with the idea of Fog ships figuring out this whole "Mental Model" thing, and having seen both series I was able to very clearly hear each one. Kudos on that once again!

Seeing the ripple effects of this as it continues to play out are going to be spectacular.

   My god.

I've very nearly finished reading- don't have time to do the whole shebang in one sitting, but just.... god, I love it the most when this kind of thing happens.

When Corwin gets to do the whole god thing and yet never quite gets it right, bumbling into the most spectacular situations imaginable by dint of... well, never quite getting ANYTHING exactly right.

Add in the perfect music (is there a part of eyrie stories I love more than the soundtracking?) and this is like... the perfect birthday present.

And DesDevSix is here, which automatically means it's perfect. Long live DesDevSix, nanodesu.

Hee hee, does this make Iona and Shioi twin sisters? I do have to admit, I'm still not entire sure how all of this works- at first, I thought that the girls were simultaneously ghosts of their old selves given structure by the Fog technology, but I'm still not entirely sure where the Arpeggio ends and the Kancolle begins.

I'll finish up the epic battle when I'm back from RL. Going to the pool myself, ironically.

First off- wow, what a show! Very, very fun read, and proof once again of the superiority of having someone who cares about what she's doing over a zombie minion.

Couple of questions that popped into my head while reading it, if I may:
-What's the disposition of Thanatonium in the UF-verse? Is the Midway Fleet's stockpile of corrosive torpedoes all there is (and if so, would that spur anyone to do anything stupid to try and get some of them), or is it a known element of whatever difficulty to get hold of?

-I noticed the "Project Warlock" callout for the hybrid-Fog ships Earthforce was using, and looking at it, the way the Fleet of Fog seems to have left behind tools and examples of how to construct their vessels for whoever goes looking to find them does sorta sound like the Shadows' MO. Is this actually a connection, or am I reading too much into it?

"This is probably a stupid question, but . . ."

From what little can be gleaned from the source, it seems to be your standard sci-fi wonder element, like unobtanium, "element zero" in Mass Effect, and so forth - a known material, but exotic and hard to work with. We know it can be synthesized by magic, since Shioi had both a TD reactor and three corrosive torpedoes aboard, and before Corwin did his thing she was a wrecked 20th-century submarine, not a Fog vessel at all. (Incidentally, she had three because Iona had that many in her Last Known Good configuration; she had four left when she went to Dìqiú and then used one on the wall at Fort Tonraq.)

For our purposes, I figure it's something that the Fog have the technology to make, but not something most individual Fog ships can make for themselves (thus making most if not all of the fleet dependent on bases like Midway for refueling and resupply). Most likely Akashi has the means to create more of it somewhere in her bagcargo hold of tricks.

(It can also evidently be de-synthesized by magic, since Corwin wouldn't have left a mass of radioactive material lying at the bottom of Qurluqtuq Fjord, however off his game he was. :)

Well, the hybrid ships being a product of something called "Project Warlock" is certainly a Babylon 5 reference at least in part (it's also a nod toward the WARLOCK in Strike Witches, which was based in a similarly bad idea). Beyond that, though, you're off-course; the Warlock-class ships are a product of (rather ham-fisted) EF reverse engineering, not products of the Fog leaving how-to hints around.

Ahh, my bad- I was referring to the Midway Island base itself; with the way everybody was shut down, it looked like if anybody had found it, they could have simply clapped their hands and had a full squadron of Fog warships to do their bidding, plus the graving docks and the knowledge and supplies to put it to use.

Possible, but I think it unlikely that Fleet Coordinator Nagato (the ship responsible for leaving the Midway Detachment there, mentioned by Kaga as the source of her last known orders) anticipated the absence of the Admiralty Code. More probable that the station (and the one elsewhere that Kongō et al. came from) were intended as some sort of contingency measure. To what end is difficult to speculate about, since we don't know why the Fog abandoned the original offensive and left Earth to begin with. Most of those left behind have suffered memory loss, and it appears those who haven't (like Lionfish) were never told in the first place. The Big Seven were not in the habit of explaining themselves to lesser ships even before the invention of Mental Models.

That was a lot of fun to read. I wasn't expecting the next installment of OOTR to be all Corwin and the Fog, but it worked out pretty neatly anyway.

I also wouldn't have expected Corwin to pick this as his first move after TBS; I guess he saw getting Iona a replacement ship-body as a concrete thing he knew how to tackle, and therefore something to do next, even if it wasn't necessarily the strategically optimal thing to do next. (It may have turned out to be the strategically optimal thing, I mean, now he's got an entire mini-fleet of Fog ships on his side, but he couldn't have known that was going to happen even if he was fully on his game.)

It's interesting that no one discovered the Midway base in four hundred-odd years. Earthforce and/or Black Omega clearly have some line on leftover bits of the fleet (it seems like Kongō didn't know about it, which is curious in itself since she was presumably constructed there, but still) and there's surely been no shortage of treasure hunters and so on, in between the end of the Fog War and the present day.

On a more meta note, having gotten this finished, do you have any comments on why it was difficult to write? That you feel comfortable sharing with the peanut gallery, I mean. I don't want to pry, but I like hearing about people's writing process.

Given the memory loss that the other ships suffered, Kongō might have had a similar problem, so she wouldn't remember where she was constructed. It's also possible that she was constructed elsewhere.

As for treasure hunters, what reason would they have to search there? Fog stealth systems are probably more than capable of hiding the fact that the entire island is hollow, even against 24th-century technology, and it's likely that nobody would bother scanning them anyhow.

<nod> I haven't had a second read-through yet, but it sounded like the loss was so complete they'd all forgotten that they'd forgotten — until someone tried to pop a what-do-I-do-next Order from her stack.

Pretty much, yeah. If you can't be doing what you need to be doing, at least be doing something.

>It's interesting that no one discovered the Midway base in four
>hundred-odd years.

Beyond its historical significance from WWII and its occasional use as an emergency airfield for trans-Pacific airliners in distress, Midway Atoll is not the focus of much interest in the world today, let alone in the 25th century. Nobody lives there since the US armed forces abandoned it in the '90s, and nowadays it doesn't even get camping naturalists much any more.

>(it seems like Kongō
>didn't know about it, which is curious in itself since she was
>presumably constructed there, but still)

Kongō has... problems. We'll get into that more later.

>On a more meta note, having gotten this finished, do you have any
>comments on why it was difficult to write?

Oh, a combination of reasons, not all (or even most) of which have anything to do with the story itself. In no particular order:

- I've been ill with one thing or another in a more-or-less serial fashion since early August. Not deathly ill or anything, but feeling poorly enough that it's hampered my concentration somewhat.

- Plus, I just generally get lazy in August.

- This story got a lot larger than it was originally supposed to be. The original conception was basically just a cute mini based on the scene where Shioi and Iona blink in bemusement at each other and Corwin facepalms at himself. The rest of the fleet and the big overarching storyline involving them, which is likely to upset (or at least prompt significant rearrangements of) more than one applecart in re the rest of the plan for OOTR, just sort of... came along, and for a while I was really kind of at a loss as to what to do with it.

- I sometimes get into situations where more than one creative wave function, if you like, are in phase with each other, and I've got enough things I want to be working on that I almost can't work on any one of them. In this case that was basically this, OWaW, and the next phase of TFLF, as well as what I thought was going to be the next OOTR installment. (You'll note that this one still isn't a Movement, even after its unexpected radical growth, because the rest of the main cast is barely if at all involved.) By rights I should have at least established the immediate aftermath of Taken first, since I'm now going to have to go back to before this story and backfill some of it at the top of the next full Movement. But it is what it is.

While reading this, I couldn't help but notice the various "like father, like son" moments Corwin was having, even if he wasn't aware of them*, or the fact that his moments were more impressive than his father's (based on the number of women sharing his bed at the end).

Good description of the battle, BTW. I had a pretty good idea of what was going on where, despite the fact that everything I know about naval combat I learned playing Advance Wars and its sequels. I can't help but feel that gave me an incomplete picture at best. ;)

* Which I assume he wasn't, given the situation, and the fact that it's Corwin we're talking about here.

As it happens, he almost certainly wasn't aware of that one, since it took everything he had left on board to supervise squaring the fleet away after the jump to Zipang, then give directions to the nearest open-sea Veil nexus and thence that island. He probably fell asleep on the bridge. At which point Iona took it upon herself to put him properly to bed; Shioi went along To Help Out; Destroyer Division 6 declared themselves his Security Detail; Tenryū, well, Tenryū isn't sure exactly why she tagged along; and Tatsuta's newly-minted Mental Model couldn't think of anything else to do other than follow Tenryū.

(Kaga probably would've pulled rank and replaced at least one of them, but, dignity of the First Carrier Division and all that. One expects she could certainly use a nap after all that.)

Corwin will be doubly bemused when he wakes up; once to discover that he has an entourage, and then again to realize that Utena's sitting over in that chair Iona was in earlier, regarding the scene and his reaction to it with evident amusement.

DesDivSix now have an important matter to investigate of course.

Corwin is an (their) Admiral.
His wife Utena (pink-hair!) is a Commodore.
But what rank is _her_ wife?
Enquiring minds want to know.

("I'm a witch, dear." "mumble-mumble how does that fit into a rank chart?" "Sort of off to the side." "How does that work!? nanodesu" "Very well, thank you.")

Well, she is the Priestess of Cephiro, which makes her the Chief of Chaplains, of a sort. The current Chief of Chaplains of the US Navy is a Rear Admiral. That seems a fair assessment of Anthy's influence. :)

I greatly enjoyed the story. In some ways, the Corwin in this story is something of a throwback. He hasn't blundering like this isn't something we've seen since his early awkwardness with Utena. OTOH, he has darn good reason to be off his game. He seems to be getting over the worst of it by the end of the story.

Hopefully his new flotilla will be of assistance against Akio. There's little that would be more fitting that Akio's casual disregard for Iona's fate causing additional complications for the evil bastard.

Just curious: From what I'm reading, the Fog ships in the UF-verse are starships as well as being able to act as wet navy ships, right?

It's true! Not to be confused with the one operated by the WDF, which is a Salusian-built Argo-class dreadnought, or the one operated by Starfleet, which is a Galaxy-class... well, officially "long-range explorer", but, c'mon.

I'm sure Ikazuchi will be thrilled that there are a whole class of space cruisers named after her. (Assuming that the Ikazuchi-class is still in use. I believe the Sterling sisters were using one, when last I looked.)

Oh, sure. No longer in production, but there are quite a number of them still in service with the WDF, the Royal Salusian Navy, and others. Ash Williams's current command, the Shanxi, is also an Ikazuchi-class ship.

Ikazuchi-chan could theoretically upgrade, she'd only have to obtain a detailed scan of one. And 1.4 megatons of nanomaterial.

The others would be really sad if she did that, though, particularly Inazuma.

I didn't expect she would, but the fact that the cruisers are, arguably, named after her (at least, I think they were in the original source material) would probably make her preen a bit.

One of the things about Fog ships is there's more to them than just '25th century weapons on disguised 20th century chassis'. Their weapons and armor are far closer to what's generally available in the 25th century, certainly, but the ratio of offensive firepower to tonnage is insane, even by 25th century standards. Every one of them more closely resembles Daggerdisc than a modern ship of the line. And their ability to reconfigure, repair, and any other nanotech advantage is a step above that. Put simply, if Ikazuchi-chan were to don a chassis the size of an Ikazuchi-class vessel (I believe it's a carrier, primarily), what kind of weaponry would we then see?

There's a very satisfying image I have now, with Akio's tower in Oriphos getting vaped by a corrosive torpedo, leaving an emasculated stump. A torpedo fired by an underage girl. Symbolism I can get behind.

Good stuff, nice parallels to OWaW. Can't wait for them to team up, but then Akio would counter with the Neuroification of a Union Core, so...

Never seen/played Kantai Collection, but now I want to. But is it just me being weird, but whenever Inazuma says her signature phrase, does anyone else hears it with the same intonation and melody as that "Mameshiba~" thing?

This cantata had something for everyone: cute girls, naval warfare history (both the hardware and the tactics), just a touch of naval warfare speculative sci-fi, space opera AI-related plots for emotional context, and MASSIVE WORLD-BENDING GODLY MAGIC.

I know you're always kind of reticient about using magic as a plot point in UF, but I think you handled it well here*. You've set up the backstory well enough to have the Actual God Powers be a last-resort sort of thing, and written the actual escalation of responses and subsequent effects of pulling out the trump card to give the feeling of "that was epic, but I hope he doesn't have to do that again any time soon". Making Corwin a deus machinarum without making it into a deus ex machina, if you will. :) Good show!

Meagen

* Having played a Magic-origin character as my main in City of Heroes, I've spent a long time thinking about magic in a modern/near future sci-fi context, and how to answer the "why don't you just use magic" question in various contexts with "because using magic to fix this problem would be needlessly complicated/too dangerous/too time-consuming/unethical".

I can just see it now. Corwin's finally starting to regain some semblance of coherence when his mother shows up carrying/levitating a whole bunch of file boxes.

"Mom? What's all this?"

"It's from Njord. He said something along the lines of, 'You made the mess, you fill out the paperwork for it!'"

(Corwin buries himself back under the covers.)

Well, as it happens he's got a meeting with the Æsir Council in the next couple-three days anyway. They'll be certain to bring it up while they've got him there.

*snrk* Amusing, but Shioi was the only one actually dead, and she was in Hel. OTOH, Valhalla did not differentiate with respect to credo so long as the warrior was honorable. There won't be any Fog ships in Valhalla now, I'd think (sentience coming so late to them, plus I thought no Fog ships were destroyed in the initial war).

To say the least. I was wondering how he's going to talk his way out of this one. Saving fifteen people isn't enough of a reason to break that seal, I'd imagine. Bringing fifteen Fog warships to their side might be, but AFAIK the Aesir stay out of mortal affairs thoroughly enough that denying Fog warships to Earth might -not- be. Unless there was a provable connection between Akio or Surtur and Earth. Say, through the Mysterons?

(edit) Oh yes, one more thing. This meeting, no doubt, has to do with Corwin's daughter. I think I mentioned this before, but if the Aesir needed a legal reason to be able to go after Akio personally, having Odin's great-granddaughter kidnapped might just qualify. Akio may have bought himself a whole new level of trouble.

Depends on whom you ask. Some would say one person was worth it. Regardless, it's not really a question of justifying the action as documenting it.

Actually, it's mostly to do with that incident in which one of the Councilors assassinated a member of the Pillar's court.

Well, in a case like this, there's the Council's opinion, and, well, no one else's. =)

Oh. Yes. Minor details like that. The rest of the Council already knew Freya was...well, frayed, if you'll forgive the double entendre. But I'm sure none of them expected -this-. Her mind isn't just messed up, it's -decaying- at a rate that brings the Necronomicon to mind. Wonder if Akio isn't sending secret love messages to her...things like, "You'll kill Clef if you really love me, sweetie!"

Ia! Ia! Akio fhtagn!

Yes, and some members of that Council have different opinions.

Be that as it may, though:

>>Regardless, it's not really a question of justifying the action as
>>documenting it.

The thing about an unsealing is that it isn't, in itself, some kind of celestial crime. The seals are there to prevent accidental damage to the mortal world from the gods' unchecked power. Breaking one is a serious matter, but not necessarily a disciplinary one. The first thing they look at when that happens is whether there was accidental damage to the mortal world. If there wasn't, step two is to see whether there was deliberate damage to the mortal world. Step three, if the answer to step two was "yes", would be to decide whether it was justified.

In this case, there wasn't any significant celestially-inflicted damage to the fabric of Midgard at all, accidental or otherwise, so... there's not really anything further to investigate. Think of it as a little bit like a naval court-martial. Those aren't always disciplinary actions; sometimes (as in the sinkings of ships by enemy action in wartime) they're just about getting what happened on paper.

Hm, okay. I think my opinion may have been unduly colored by my memory of the original AMG anime, where punishments for gods were pretty severe. I was thinking the act of breaking the seal was in and of itself a serious crime, which could easily be compounded by what was done while the god was unsealed.

Makes sense, and thanks for the clarification.

That's more along the lines of what I was thinking when I wrote that little vignette. Had it been a real crime, I suspect the Valkyrior would have been sent to arrest Corwin (or at least escort him back to Asgard), rather than sending several file boxes of paperwork to be filled out (in triplicate, no carbon, naturally) :)

There's also the fact that he broke the seal specifically to keep his word to those who had accepted him as their God (even if he already was, they voluntarily chose to follow him). I think had he NOT done everything in his power to protect them he might have gotten into more trouble (whether "legally" or simply karmically)...

I think most Trek fans would remember that Picard was himself court-martialed following the loss of the Stargazer, with his being ultimately being absolved of any negligence and commended for how he handled the confrontation, even if it did result in the destruction of his command.

Though as someone said in the context of (Rot13 for spoilers) Wb Jnygba'f Gur Cuvybfbcure Xvatf, "ending a book with a deus ex machina is probably justified when some of the characters are deī and others are machinae." I of course immediately thought of UF when I read that comment.

while i did thoroughly enjoy it this chapter required a bit of work on my part to get sorted out character/series origin wise. i hadnt finished watching the Kancolle anime and had never heard of Arpeggio so at Kongo's introduction i had to pause and find/watch Arpeggio 'cause that was not the Kongo i knew(loved how Kongo of Kantai cursed in english) but after having watched Arpeggio some things became pretty hard to fit. i understand the idea of using the character dialogue from the Kancolle game, great timesaver in some ways and helps easily establish, for those in the know, who is who and what their persona is like however many of the instances are so completely out of context if the fusion of Kancolle and Arpeggio is leaning more towards the Fog than the Kantai thatm, for me at least, i was brought to a complete halt trying to parse why certain dialogue would be used in scenes X, Y and Z when at that point human and fog are still technically in conflict.

it is probably just me but i dont see how certain lines work prior to the 'assuming command' scene.
